Been thinking after contributing to a couple of posts. The terminology for aussie rules has been changed a bit by the AFL marketing machine, and notably used by the media.

AFL is now a term to cover the game of Australian Rules.
Burley or Sherrin only produce AFL Balls.
AFL Star is someone who plays for one of the 18 teams.
AFL Superstar is someone on a million plus dollars.

Others?

Don't mean to be a wet blanket but it's a bit depressing to think about. Seems to be driven a lot by the media while totally ignoring the state leagues  :(

i noticed now the commentators refer to a stat being "a world record"

have any of you heard that ?? i have heard it on more than one occassion. even paul roos said it one time. how can a player have a "world record" number of possessions? are they weighing up the stats in the aussierules swedish & canadian leagues .

we are americanizing everything. have no idea why we bother . bruce macevaney is a culprit too.

Australian Rules is the name of a sport.
AFL is a league in which the sport of Australian Rules is played.

Unfortunately & incorrectly the term AFL has become synonymous with the actual sport.

It is like calling the English Premier League, English Soccer.

Here I go - back on my old hobby horse. I'm sick of unimaginative commentators falling back on Americanisms because they don't have the talent to keep it Australian. Examples - run with player, plays like a quarterback, deeeeefence, offffence, and my favourite one - kicks from the paint. FFS I've even heard Middlemass (or whatever his name is) use it in a WAFL game. Corben, go call a game with DHdwayne and his talentless mates and take your Americanisms with you.
