It appeared to me that there must have been some sort of "line in the sand" type meeting between players coaches and the club after that embarrassing effort at Fremantle last week. All the intensity, tackling and desperation that they were demonstrating in some early season games were back.
After a shaky start ( it was 2-2 to zip after 10 minutes) Swans steadied and absolutely dominated the first half from that point. I would say that the 2nd quarter was pretty close to the best 30 minutes of footy I have seen from them all season. It was wonderful to see Swans getting the ball out of the centre and delivering it quickly to give the forwards a chance. Doc battled hard against the two Eagles giants. The midfield was really even yesterday with others like Cipro, Payne, Hackett and Garcia taking some of the load off the usual suspects in Riggio Turner and Hampson. West Coast seemed rattled in the 2nd term which showed when they lost their discipline and conceded a "double goal" and also lost Duggan and Brander during this period.
With a 26 point lead at half time everybody held their breath to see if Swans could play 4 quarters this time. The Eagles came back strongly in the 2nd half but the pleasing thing from a Swans point of view was that unlike other games they were able to regroup and snatch the initiative back. The first time was in the 3rd quarter when WCE kicked the first 3 goals and Swans were stuck on their half time score for 15 minutes. Swans steadied and got a goal against the run of play to extend the margin back to more than 2 goals.
Then more seriously after Notte had kicked the first goal in the last quarter, WCE got on a run of 4 goals, grabbed the lead in the time on period and Swans fans started to get a depressing sense of deja-vu. Many Swans guys were cramping and all of a sudden looked fatigued. The fact that they once again were able to force the ball up the field, regain the lead and then hang on to it in a nervous last few minutes was a great credit to the players and there was a lot of jubilation after the siren.
It was a win that everyone at the club desperately needed from the president, board, coaches, players, members and supporters just to give us all belief that there is a glimmer of light at the end of the tunnel and I'm sure it was celebrated in the club rooms last night
