BC I sincerely hope that neither you nor anyone close to you ever suffers from a mental health problem. Also, perhaps you might like to return your degree in medicine.

42 how do you know I've never had anyone near to me with mental health issues? Also, if I were to be a medical practitioner it would be as a Proctologist as I can spot arseholes from a mile away.

To be fair BC, I think you have raised an important issue that is often mentioned when this sort of thing happens. There was some innuendo around Buddy Franklins absence last year. I don't know Chris either and I take the opposite view to you, however I don't think we need to be so closed minded not to recognise that there are a range of beliefs about mental health issues and that by talking openly about these views instead of stifling debate, we may come to more of an understanding about the fact that many of these illnesses are well and truly outside the control of a lot of people and therefore remove some of the stigma that this topic seems to generate.

mikeh with the greatest of respect how can and I quote " cite mental illness which is flavour of the month apparently." possibly provide a better understanding of mental health issues?

Lets all remember where Andrew Krakour was before he came to Swans. And remember what Andrew gave us back in return.Lets remember Chris Yarran is a good AFL player as we speak.Back at Swans with all his mates this could be huge for Chris and Swans.

Swan42, unfortunately a number of people I have come across have similar points of view to this. What I was trying to say was that the only way to remove the stigma of mental illness is to engage and educate people and discuss concerns. As has been proved in 2016, the strategy of shouting down and/or ridiculing people who have different views to ours does not work, just look at what has happened in the political arena in the US, UK and Australia

heaven help anyone who posts anything remotely negative against a bogan player either past or present. what I did was raise an issue Yarran's manager flagged in that there were various opinions on why he left Richmond and his mental health was only one of them. 42 you don't live in Freo do you as you'd fit right in down there?

I had a look through the list of players who nominated for the draft and I noticed that the list included Aiden Anderson, Levi Ridley and Dylan Nelson. Not sure how they expected to be looked at by AFL clubs when they were not playing at the state league level. I wonder if they are considering returning to WAFL in 2017 in order to push their case?

I don't see a problem with what BC has raised here and the manner he has raised it. I think he's been quite respectful. I think some of you are being a bit precious. I dare anyone to tell me I have no idea what it's like to be in a dark place and you ask yourself is it worth living?

I think most people have been there. BC is merely highlighting the fact it seems to be a new phenomenon but that maybe due to the fact it is talked about now more openly whereas before it was hidden like a taboo subject.

But I do think the youth of today are mollycoddled too much and it's the social workers that seem to have the opposite effect instead of helping they make things worse.

We see the very real effect of the lack of respect for elders and authority these days among the younger generations. That's my two cents worth.

a story for another day i reckon DD, its nothing to do with the topic New Recruits.

mikeh - players stay registered for the draft for a certain amount of time, not sure what it is but it must be a few years to see those kids still listed.

great point mike but here's the thing...the definition of mental illness covers a whole range of different conditions ranging from one extreme such as suicidal tendencies to the other which may include just having a series of bad days etc. is being homesick a mental illness? you could probably argue it is if it engenders depression and a downward spiral in general wellbeing. I think some tend to use the term a little too freely to validate what it is they're feeling and as a result, may denigrate others who have genuine mental health issues. is Yarran suffering from mental health issues? I don't know and that's best left to trained professionals but I do get a bit concerned when I see footballers claiming mental health when it appears on face value that they're either just plain homesick or over the grind of AFL football...and in recent times there's been no shortage of either. In answer to 42's previous someone very near and dear to me is currently off work on long term sick leave due to depression caused by the workplace so I have seen it first hand which is why I do get a bit miffed when others use it as an excuse.
