It was great to watch the former Swans full forward Simon Beasley on Open Mike on Fox Footy tonight.
Not that the Victorian centric Sheahan would know where he actually came from as all he wanted to talk about was his Footscray days.
Despite a recent suspension from the Victorian stewards stemming from his bookmaking days he has done all right for himself has our former blond headed goalkicking star, was good viewing! :)

I think you will find it was actually the Pieman who brought up the fact he came from Swan Districts under John Todd for 4 years in the WAFL & 4 years at University Amateurs before that in answering Sheahan's question why he didnt play his "1st VFL game" until the age of 25!! ;)

It's great seeing old highlights of him and blokes like capper and Johnston from last week. It's easy to forget with all of these ordinary players but branded as stars in today's game just how good those guys really were.

You are dead right mate ..those blokes back in the day were consistently good week in, week out, year in, year out and footy was only part time back then as they all had full time jobs as well. Imagine if some of the greats from the 60's, 70's, 80's & 90's were full time training like the modern day players it would be frightening to see how good players like Ablett, Lockett, Dunstall, Quinlan, Michael, Farmer, Cable, Walker et al would have been!!

Yep and Salmon was a good 1 too. How many times did he miss a chunk of games then come back in and kick 8 or 9. It was like shelling peas for those blokes. Nowadays Buddy or Jack kick 1 bag every 8 games and they're mega stars.

None of those blokes mentioned would last long in todays footy because A) you cant fart onfield without copping weeks, B) they would have their natural instincts and ability coached out of them so they can play todays sterile, robotic AFL footy, eg G. Jetta used the barrel on Sat for the Ducks to get it forward and was a ripper, in AFL he would hve been dragged, There is only 1 player in AFL today that i will stop and watch and that is Gary Ablett jnr the best player in the country by a mile
Beneath the Southern cross i stand, on Bassendean Oval, can in hand, Swan Districts, you Farkin Beauty!

I'm with you Swandog....bring back the barrel. Was screaming from the sidelines to Jetta 'Go the barrel, go the barrel' and then he launched one. The bloke next to me goes "Aaaaawwwwwwwwwwwwwwe" with all the excitement of a 10year old kid. Don't get much better in footy than that for me.

Certainly guys like Brad Shine, who made the ball their objective, would be oinged for holding the ball all the time these days.

Good interview..very enjoyable. It brought back memories of my old ammo playing days at CBC when Mario "collarbones" Cattalini put Simon over the fence at Freo Oval one day when he was with Uni...Mario was built like a washing machine and lined him up from about 30 meters...you could hear poor old Simon's teeth rattle and he never quite made it back on the ground....funny stuff.
