I think we need to keep in perspective that apart from the first quarter we were completely outplayed by the Tigers and as Success Hill said if not for our straight kicking we would have been beaten by 10 goals. I am hoping for a more even 4 quarter performance against Perth next week. You would think that guys like Bain, Riley,  More, Garcia, Wilson and Sideris would be pressing for selection given their efforts in the reserves yesterday.

18 goals in any match in the past few seasons would have seen quite a comfortable win for Swans - but footy can be a cruel bugger
You'd be more confident seeing those 18 being able to be obtained regardless
It's now capable

mikeh agreed we should not too carried away.  However, how many seasons has it been since our supporters thought we would be able to kick 18 goals in a match?  Sure we were extremely accurate but it shows that we have players up forward to kick such a total provided our coaching staff REALISE that if we don't have any players up forward we certainly won't kick goals.  Personally unless we are kicking against a cyclonic strength wind we need 2 to 3 players at a bare minimum up forward at all times.

Another positive is that during the match when Claremont were dominating we could easily have lost by 10 goals.   We fought back and in the last quarter there was a glimmer of hope we could actually snatch an unlikely victory.  Similarly, winning the colts and ressies point to some hope of a relatively successful season.

Finally, my impression of the game that it was enjoyable to watch and provided hope to most Swans's supporters at the end of the game.  I will always support Swans until either they die or I do, but I have reached a point where I am not going to watch games where we constantly struggle to kick 7 or 8 goals because we don't have any players forward of centre for the majority of the game.   Watching grass grow is more exciting.

I'm pretty sure we can elevate some ressie or Colts players. As the season progresses .To add some run and carry and speed up our play+ offensive capabilities. When our pattern of play slowed in the 2nd QTR.Claremont stopped us at our half fwd line. Then kicked 9 of the next 10 goals.

Disappointing to lose again in the first game of the season but not totally surprising.
Not all doom and gloom though as there were some positives to come from the game and day.
Firstly in the League game I thought it was the best spectacle of WAFL footy I have seen in a long time.
With fast free flowing end to end footy played for the most part which resulted in almost 40 goals kicked for the match (unfortunately we gave up 20 of them) which I have been crying out for years about.
Thankfully none of that dreadfully boring ugly scrums, flooding/zoning awful crap that has been played for years in the WAFL.
Claremont are always going to be a top 2 or 3 side with the luxurious zones they have and played accordingly, just ran harder than us when the game was on the line.
We had our chances in the last qtr especially when only 2 points down and going forward with either Palmer or Bayok loose all alone inside forward 50 and a simple walk to the line goal on offer but the young debutant Collins was pushed off his kick and subsequently went out of bounds on the full and CL took it the length of the ground to score effectively a 2 goal play.
Claremont's deeper midfield won the day and Swans need to rectify this starting this Saturday night as a couple of players chosen did not have any influence on the game whatsoever whilst Costigan was crudely taken out in the first 5 minutes of the game ending his day and probably season.
Well done to the SD Colts & Reserves on their good wins against the perennial Grand Finallist's in both of those grades.

do you reckon it looks like the all of the sides' coaches have either been told or otherwise to make a more attractive spectacle to bring more back through the gates mate?
it certainly does look like sides are getting the pill into their forward line far quicker than recent years - bearing in mind it is only one game in of course
I do expect some games will see more dour attitudes and some games will be on wet days which traditionally cause lower scoring

BH,I'm surprised you think Costigan was "crudely taken out." I thought it was a completely and utterly fair hip and shoulder by Martinis.
