Hey Subi folk....slightly off topic here, hope you don’t mind...seems to be a bit of ground swell talking Sokol up for AFL call up which did surprise me ...has he improved that much as a player since coming across from SF reserves or has the opposition therefore comp diminished somewhat...be interested to know with the Subi supporter perspective of the comp after dominating it for the past couple of decades where the level is currently at...hard to know observing as an absent SD supporter as we continue to devolve as a footballing club ...honestly interested to hear what you guys are observing

Thats a good question DW. As you quite rightly say Soks played only a couple of league games for Souths in 2015 with mostly reserves in that year. He came to Subi in 2016 and has grown ever since. Thats not surprising as he was only 19 or 20 when he came on board but has focused on above the head marking and kicking at goals in recent times to make a difference. He's our best hit up forward at the moment and a club like Gold Coast could do worse than listing him as he plays above his size. I hope that answers your question.

on the wider competition, until this season we have dominated in state football so the league must be of a reasonable standard overall.

He has the physical attributes to make it at the next level he has a strong solid build, a tick over 6' Tall good pace a very good mark, decent tank and his accuracy has improved markedly since the great Austin Robertson has been given him some coaching. Like Liam Ryan he would need to improve his defensive skills to make the next step but under a decent AFL coaching regime he will get that training. Forwards rely so much on the delivery of the footy so he would need to be very efficient if he went somewhere like GC. While having some way to go I would liken him to WC's Jamie Cripps, he could play a similar role imho.

Cripps runs as much as an AFL mid-fielder, Sokol would need to increase his fitness base to play AFL, he doesnt run past half forward at WAFL level, certainly better than plenty on the dockers list and should get a chance as late pick somewhere you would think.

Agree MO, it's a big step up in fitness from WAFL to AFL but an AFL pre-season will sort that out. Dont necessarily agree with your comment about not going beyond half forward and you would not have seen him play as often as I have, he often gets down in the mids and backline when needed, but he will certainly need to improve in those areas to make a go of it at AFL. Like you said, Freo could do a lot worse. I've always wondered why Freo never gave Blair Bell a go, he's in a similar vein to Sok, kicks plenty of goals and has a good physical edge to his game, but we are talking about the team with one of the worst recruiting regimes in the comp.
