Well a good win but what an uninspiring game that never reached great heights.
Good effort by the colts and Subi had a late run at it in the ressies with Boggie making a good return and Horse finding a bit of it. South are the team to beat in the 2nds but with Subi's outs at the moment I'm sure they'll give them a run as the season progresses.
The league game never looked like exciting the crowd at any stage. It was a low scoring tussle with flooded forward lines, many ball-ups from hard tackling and stoppages. Very little free-flowing footy at all realy.
In the first Subi kicking to the TAFE scoring end were slow out of the blocks for 15mins while South showed good pace and clearance work. Subi's mids were down on form compared to previous weeks with Bairstow,K Hams and Bewick getting amongst it along with Pickett. When Subi's mids lifted our game went up a cog with Menengola and Hancock starting to get their hands on it.
For Subi opportunities were wasted with Yarran missing a sitter from a set shot.
We lacked vision and awareness going forward but fortunatly Halligan and Della gave us something to aim for with the big fella getting a goal in time on to give us a handy first quarter lead. Well done to local Luke Norriss on his debut and he was in the action from the start.
In the 2nd Souths run returned and they had the better of it through the middle setting up spare players with big Higgins throwing his weight around they looked threatning. Pickett continued to play well along with K Hams, Parry,Schloithe, Carter, young Dragovich and Verrier.
For Subi lucky Yarran got a late mark and goal against the breeze to keep us in it but South had the best of the quarter. Hancock, Waters, Phelan (who had been quiet) and Yarran got a sniff. Della continued and Heal did well along with Twommey playing his usual sweeping role accross half back.
South probably should have scored more in the 2nd so the scoreboard flattered Subi.
The third term would be vital for Subi but Souths once again smothered our forwards flooding down which was highly effective. Subi only kicked the one goal to the scoring end after Sella (possibly Higgins)missed a sitter goal and Subi transfered the ball fast up to their forwards and Halligan got one within a minute.
This play was vital in Subi setting up the win as it un-did all South's hard work and would have pissed the players off no end.
For South the usual previous best players along with Cook and for Subi Deluca, Hancock and Heal played well.
In the fourth I thought Subi still have a lot of work to do as South had been playing slightly better than them since quarter time and if the Dogs got an early one then game on !!!
This wasn't to be after Subi missed some easy attempts from Kitchin and Halligan to keep the dogs within a sniff. Then Della made a contest in the goal square turned on a thrippney bit and toed through a six pointer and game over - a hard earned 4 pemiership points to Subi.
South played well today but lacked the polish of Subi (when required) to stand up and win the game. The umpiring was a bit average with many dodgy decisions and non-decisions (both ways but I think Subi were a bit stiffer) Silly of umpire Parry to aknowledge the Subi supporters taunts after the game. An umpire is best to walk straight off the ground and not respond or look at the supporters (in my opinion)
South had a game plan to beat Subi but they weren't attacking enough and they lacked a spark up forward to win them the game.
Subi won as they had the best forward on the day in Halligan hence I had him as BOG followed by Della, Deluca who's efforts as the game went on were brilliant especially in setting up our last goal. Hancock, Menengola and Heal and Twommey did well down back.
For South I thought Pickett had the best 4 quarter effort along with the ducking A Hams, Higgins who was the best big man on the ground, Dragovich who shows great promise and Cook as the game went on.
Subi have more injuries so I agree it was a good win with-out being flash under the circumstances. We missed Rumba down back and Robbo through the middle.
Subi had a few sore boys out there today and will do well to butter-up next week !!!
South will get better and will play a big part in September Action.
