Good game in trying conditions. I thought Harry Marsh was very good through the middle early, Heal earned his keep up forward along with Sokol, KItch workmanlike, Gus Litherland ran off well and Stainsby terrific off half back although he could be in trouble for a sling tackle on T E-B which saw him out of the game with concussion. East Perth worked very hard and were clearly at a disadvantage with Jones and T E-B both out with injury. Big Putt was competitive in the ruck but needs to be a bit more urgent around the ground and at times didn't attack the contest with the amount of vigour required at this level. He's only young and will get better. All in all a good team effort and glad we got over the line.

Tough game. Hard fought. Hot. Subi wore them down despite a pace deficit. Longer quarters seemed to help subi. To be honest, quarters were far too long. Lights were terrible. crowd was healthy. Bar very healthy.

A shame about the TBE concussion. Never good to see, and one of our own. Sainsbury was initially the victim and must have lost his temper. He played well though. Upton looked better than last year. Promising all round. Braut particularly promising as a forward. Borchet just a bit out of touch. Should improve. East Perth will be disappointed. Didn't look as fit. Nice to be back at the footy.

Johnny, Subiaco certainly deserved their win in a hard-fought game, but the perception that East Perth didn't look as fit may have been due to the Royals having just two healthy blokes on the bench for almost three quarters.
As well as the concussion to Tom Edwards-Baldwin (I believe he was taken to hospital), Scott Jones copped a bad corkie to the hip.
I didn't see what initially happened to your man Stainsby, but his treatment of former teammate TEB didn't look good and I'm pretty sure he was reported.
Was feeling optimistic when East Perth jumped out to almost a four-goal lead in the first quarter, but the Lions were able to punish a number of glaring defensive errors by the Royals.
Agree with you about the good-size crowd and the lights (or lack of them) being appalling.

have to agree with you archie our loss was not due to fitness.obviously subi played a lot better after quarter time.once jones and tbe went off i had the feeling east perth would not win we contibuted with too many dropped marks and errors in the backline.things like sebit running too far without bouncing the ball  didn't help.i'.m not sure the subi guy was reported but with a player in hospital it would have to be looked at.

Yes I disagree with the fitness comment as well. EP ran all over us in the third and caught us on the break several times with smart ball movement and our backs were positioned too high up the ground and were exposed more than once. I too thought your blokes ran out of legs due to lack of rotations and the warm conditions. A good game of footy with a bit of feeling. I hope T E-B is ok and reckon Stainsby will cop a week. A special mention for Robertson of EP...he came to Perth last year with a big reputation and showed why yesterday as he was terrific. I'm also liking some of the big bodies coming through for Subi in Braut, Fulgrabe, Atkinson, Greg Clark who's been around a while but is still young. These guys give us some presence on the paddock and will get better with time. I also think Dela should be used as a mid as the forward structure of having so many talls didn't work well. Dela at 194cm is the same height as Fyfe and shorter that Pat Cripps so see no reason why he can't run through the middle given the tank he has.

The other thing that was weird for me was that I was in the main grandstand and sitting directly in front of me was Ben Newton. In one of the boxes to my right was Kyle Horsley and then a little while later Chris Phelan showed up. I'm thinking bugger!!! It's a shame 3 of our best midfielders over the last 10 years are onlookers and have retired...what a difference any or all could have made on the day.

Yep agree with that both teams will
improve a bit and need to. Sokol is your key and looks back fit and firing. Lose him and you could struggle. Subi as usual big and strong all over the park perhaps lacking a bit of brilliance like us.

Does anyone know what's happened to Max Walters? He didn't play a preseason game and was missing yesterday.

Just as an aside, spent the afternoon with Stephen Lester, played for both teams, good fella, great sense of humour

Grump, a bit of trivia about Stephen Lester thanks to Ric's excellent WAFL FootyFacts website.
Lester's last game for Subiaco was a loss against East Perth at Perth Oval in Round 2, 1993.
His first game for East Perth was a loss against Subiaco at Subiaco Oval in Round 9, 1993.
I venture to say that there'd be few WAFL players whose last game for Club A was against Club B and their first game for Club B was against Club A.
