28 new cases recorded in WA today. The curve keeps climbing.

Ten thousand new cases recorded in New York. California and New York streets are empty.
Get on your bike.

The sad news from Spain with about 22000 active cases. 5000 confirmed new cases in the last 24 hours is the latest report. Apparently most of the cases are slight to mild with about 1300 deaths recorded so far. Apparently tent hospitals are being set up.

Almost 50 of the state's most senior medical specialists, physicians, and infectious diseases experts are demanding immediate and widespread isolation measures to prevent thousands of deaths in Western Australia.

In an extraordinary strongly-worded letter to Premier Mark McGowan, they have warned the measures currently in place have not slowed the spread of COVID-19 and WA's health system could collapse as soon as May.
The letter, which was signed by St John of God Health Care's head of infectious diseases Astrid Arellano, cosigned by former national Australian Medical Association president Michael Gannon and 47 other specialists, calls for the enforcement of social distancing, enforced quarantine for confirmed cases, school shutdowns and the closure of WA's border except for only the most essential travel.

The doctors warn that without strong action and decisive leadership, "first tens, then hundreds and then thousands of vulnerable West Australians will die".
"We will have nurses, business leaders, school teachers, mothers, fathers, and our grandparents who will die with us unable to do anything but watch it happen."

According to the doctors, social isolation measures to date have been manifestly inadequate to stop or slow down the rate of infection.

The rate of confirmed cases in WA had doubled every three days, which is consistent with countries where social isolation measures had been ignored or not put in place.

The united specialists expect the pandemic to peak in mid-to-late May in WA if social distancing is not effectively reduced now.

This would mean there would be an extra 400 Intensive Care Unit ventilators required a day to meet the demand.

But if every West Australian reduced their normal social contact by half, infections would peak in mid-to-late August and only 52 new ICU ventilators a day would be needed.

If tough measures are not put in place, the doctors estimate the number of hospital beds required would be three times those currently available.

There are currently fewer than 200 ICU ventilators available in WA, but at its peak specialists might need 4000.

"We feel the community is ready to make the sacrifices required and we are not prepared to let this monumental disaster happen without loudly speaking out because we don’t want to watch people die.

"People will forgive the imposed hardships they may suffer but they will not forgive us if we, knowingly, do not act now to stop the demise of thousands of Western Australians."

Mr McGowan said on Sunday afternoon that WA was in a far better position than NSW or Victoria, but he had not read the letter from the specialists.

"I haven't seen that letter, but we take the best medical advice in the country and we have put in place pretty strict rules at this point in time," he said.

"Obviously, we will have further discussions about making them stricter tonight."
The Premier said the government was trying to do all it could to secure more ventilators, both nationally and internationally.

"We've got people working on factories, we're trying to secure local manufacturing of ventilators as we speak," he said.

"We've got people working on foreign governments to try and get more ventilators into Australia.

"We're doing everything we can to secure these sorts of medical supplies for Western Australia."

On Sunday, Mr McGowan announced the WA border would be closed on Tuesday.

From 1.30pm Tuesday arrivals from interstate will be ordered to self-isolate for 14 days.

Assuming this can be considered a credible study you would have to ask the question, why on earth are we not in complete lock-down.

Unless we want to end up like Italy the States & the Federal Gov't really only have one choice and that is to ban any non essential service. That means all retail and hospitality and other business deemed non essential must close now.

That could be quite true HE. Although I'm no expert.
For example a chemist will tell you viruses droplets from the common flu can live for 1 or 2 hours after being sneezed or coughed. But would imagine the time frame depends on which surface said droplets are on. The virus germs might stay active longer on hard surfaces like glass, metal and hard plastics. Whereas soft material like cloth and paper would offer a much shorter time of activity. The ambient temperature and humidity would also have a bearing on how long the germs remain active once ejected. If anyone is coughing or sneezing in the vicinity, simply keep your distance.

Total number of cases out of China is total bullshit. Their number has been sitting in the 80, 000’s for weeks. They might have it under control in Wuhan but they aren’t telling us figures around the rest of China.

Who is policing the closure of the 59 massage shops in the city of stirling.
Isn't it strange to see Asian take away places refusing to take cash.

Anyone tells me they won't accept cash, and they simply won't get paid! End of story.
