Po, this is a disgraceful way to treat one of our near neighbours and a new struggling country in Timor. The Lib pollies involved at the time and the current Lib govt need to be open and accountable on this issue.

Just in the same way labour need to accept responsibility for the Indo issue which happened on their watch and is now left for the current govt to sort out that issue.
Swings and roundabouts and proves that both sides of politics cannot claim the high moral ground.

Agree Po, the government cant sit by and let Holdens shut up shop even if it means throwing some money at them, too many small feeder industries depend on them and the unemployment consequences would be grim, SA are already struggling and if Holden closed their Elizabeth plant it would be a knife threw the SA economies heart and Central Districts FC would go broke!!

Didn't Ford announce they were pulling the pin back under Labour's watch?

Why should Holden be given special treatment? They build inferior cars at a large cost.

Do we expect the Federal government to bail out other Australian companies if they aren't turning a profit?

In Europe car companies share resources - they operate out of one location to minimise cost. Why can't Ford and Holden do the same?

I don't want my tax dollars spent non propping up a mediocre company producing mediocre goods. I always laugh when people fork out $40k plus non a Holden.

I hear what you say Shiz and whether you think Holdens/Fords are good or crap is irrelevant, it's a case of an enterprise being of a size that it's importance to a states economy like it is to SA & Vic is so vital and the numbers it employs and that feeder manufacturers employ is more important than worrying about a subsidy. If a government decides to support an entity like GMH it will be based on comparisons between how much dole and other social welfare it will have to hand out to those made redundant and the social impact it will have on individuals and communities, long term stuff like physical and mental health that are impacted by long term unemployment. A very complex issue that needs to be looked at in a more pragmatic and less emotional way.

Isn't that the issue! The Australian public are voting with their dollars and buying cars other than Holden. The number of Holdens sold in this country and overseas has seen a dramatic decline in recent years.
