In the wake of the phone tapping scandal, what are everyone's thoughts on this matter? It seems that Indonesians are burning Australian flags in the streets after their President cuts diplomatic ties with Australia. Protests at the Australian Embassy are imminent.

Well let's cut our military and aid support, turn back every boat that enters our country, upgrade the travel warning to Indonesia and play hard ball for once.

Maybe my view is very simplistic but it would be nice for a political commentator to explain it to me in lamens terms why we need Indonesia.

Absolutely agree 100% with everything you've said Shiz. I have no doubt that Abbott has phoned them by now but it appears SBY is resorting to megaphone diplomacy with a presidential election looming.

If I were Abbott I'd just ignore them as they've only cancelled joint military exercises (who cares?) and stopping asylum seekers (like that's worked since 2007). They're not prepared to stop taking aid $ or buying our cattle...so I can't really see what all the fuss is about.

This is an immature response by Indonesia. And its hardly a surprise. They are extremely difficult to deal with in a general sense & it seems we are always required to walk on egg shells around them, not the other way around. And to be honest I blame our own leaders. The perception is we are a push over.

Trade is the big issue, but at the end of the day this spying situation is no different to what they did to us in 2004. They need to grow up , however that wont happen. They are as stubborn as an old mule.

If Australia do apologise (I hope they don't) but I suspect they will, then either Indonesia get over it and move on or we cut the millions in aid and support we give them at the core. Enough is enough. It is about time our governments hardened up to these nations a bit. The same way they do with us. I personally have had a gutful.

I also find it very suspicious that this was leaked to the Indonesians. I actually smell a rat. Considering the phone taps were done under Kevin Rudds reign, the Labor party have been very coy on the issue. Strange how they even have an opinion on how Abbott handles it, considering they started it. Its all very strange and a real mess for Tabbot to sort through. Good luck.

Response:
(1) Withdraw from the United Nations Refugeee Convention- write up a law similar with humanitarian values in accepting refugees BUT with ID papers only-NO PAPERS NO CHANCE!(NO TICKY NO LAUNDRY)
(2) Fly Kevin Ruddd to the Aust Embassy- he can stand out the front and explain why this happened (2009 he was PM send Carr over as well)
(3) Fly the ABC executives over and let them explain to the flag burners why they did it.
(4) A direct swap- Give Indonesia Christmas Island (we can thank Singapore for us having it) and we'll take Bali!

Explain to me what the ABC journalists have to answer for, they found some actions being undertaken and under their charter reported it as did every newspaper in the land and region.

It is only now that the Murdoch et al outlets complained and that was after the priest made his 'media' release comments.

If it was a Murdoch phone taping the priest would be whole heartedly agreeing with it!

Indonesia needs a wake up call what a bunch of hypocrites and the Australian Government is soft of this Dictatorship which has a government rife with corruption.

Lets look at a couple of points.
Refugee's - Indonesia is not assisting Australia in this illegal trade which causes loss of life. They are actively supporting the Illegals by transporting them to boats using Military trucks etc. Lots of money is changing hands.
The Australia government at great expense gave Indonesia 3 patrol boats which are NOT used on the coastline where the Illegals depart.
On top of this we supply huge amounts of military aid and training to their forces at HUGE expense to the Australian people.
On top of this we supply Foreign aid including the building of lots of schools under the Labor Government.

Indonesia burns of huge expanse of old forest growth which cause a huge pollution problem in neighbouring countries. I experienced this in Malaysia where KL was covered in smoke from the Peat burning in Indonesia.

Now lets look at the soft approach the Government took in East Timor where Indonesia invaded this country Killing up to 200,000 innocent civilians and Fretlin Freedon Fighters. Included in this kill rate was the MURDER of the Australian Journalists. Watch the Movie Balbao which was banned in Indonesia B)
The Commander of the Indonesian forces is now a Very high up government member and was responsible for many of the deaths. He should be tried for war crimes.

The Indonesians have the audacity to call the Australian prime Minister Arrogant. Yet all his doing is looking after Australian affairs. Intelligence gathering is a normal part of any country with close neighbors. The Indonesians are doing it to Australia. Imagine what the response would be if the Australian Government called the Indonesian leader ARROGANT. We wont go there.

In conclusion Indonesia has to GET THEIR OWN HOUSE in order before criticizing other countries. The Australian govern is bending over to appease this mob of thin skinned people. We are to soft.
Ok we have diplomacy but we must put our foot down instead of jumping when they say jump.

If they expel our diplomats I say expel theirs and Fark them.
Cut off Aid of all kinds.
Let a few of the very rich in Indonesia put their hands in their pockets.
Most of the hotels in Bali etc are most probably owned by goverment ministers and people in high positions - Dont go there!

Indonesia is like a spoilt child and they will continue on this way if we continue to crawl up their arses.

That's right. Boycott them all together and spend your tourist dollars at home. There's some magical players right here in WA. Best thing my parents did for me is take me out of school in year 8 for a month and we explored our great state.

And now we have a Indonesian paper publishing cartoon about OUR PRIME Minister

Image the Indonesians reaction if Leunig or another political cartoon was published about their leader or country Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono or SBY

Maybe A LETTER OF APOLOGY SHOULD BE DEMANDED BY ABBOTT B)

he middle-brow broadsheet, Rakyat Merdeka, whose title literally means The Freedom of the People, caricatured the Australian Prime Minister as prising open a door marked "Indonesia" to peep inside.
A caricature on the front page of an Indonesian newspaper depicts Abbott as a peeping tom, prising the door of Indonesia open with his hand down the front of his pants. He's moaning: "Ssst! Oh My God Indo ... So Sexy".

Front page: Tony Abbott depicted as a peeping Tom.

Australia's reputation in Indonesia hits new low..
As far as I am concerned and most Australians the Indonesians have HIT A NEW LOW.

As he is shown to drool, sweat and masturbate, he is moaning, "Ssst! Oh My God Indo ... So Sexy".

The cartoon suggests that Australia's spying on the telephones of the President, Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, his wife Ibu Ani Yudhoyono, and his intimate circle, gave some kind of prurient pleasure to a brutish, hairy-legged Australia.
