This on Larry Pickering so there may be some truth to it:

The REASON why KRudd "THE DUD" called the election was that yesterday (Aug 7) he got news that the PNG Parliament is putting thru A VOTE OF NO CONFIDENCE for O'Neil. But here's the crunch. It will vote on kicking O'Neil out on 10th SEPTEMBER!!! KRudd "THE DUD" needed to go for the 7th because an election ONE WEEK LATER would see the Manus Island deal the two stitched up, STOPPED. The PNG MPs are hostile that O'Neil did this and it will probably cost O’Neil his position. KRudd "THE DUD" was desperate to go to the G20 in Russia. Not gunna happen now. Looks like Manus won't go ahead either. Can you imagine what the Australian voters are going to say when this gets out ? What a deceiving mongrel he is.

Would not surprise me,

I was very surprised he missed the trip to G20, he would of loved that.

Clearly he has something else on his mind, as his campaigning is lacklustre , maybe it's the PNG problem.

More than that Bazza, I'd suggest that internal Labor party polling has shown Rudd he is on the ropes. The recent WA and QLD elections predicted comfortable wins for the coalition- not the routs that followed. Adding to Rudd's problems is a growing realisation that if he loses he will be discarded by his party. None of them like him and he was brought back purely because they thought he was their best hope to win. This must be hard to swallow for a bloke who seems unable to cope with the idea of living his life out of the limelight.

Really, this election is Abbot's to lose and that is still possible if he keeps putting his foot in his mouth as he has the last few days. But check out the bookmaker sites to see the true odds.

Yep, Spot on Goodie, I agree internal ALP Polling will be tracking in the wrong direction, and he clearly knows it, as you say there is no doubt he will be unloaded as leader shortly after the loss, if not he may even walk to avoid the humiliation of being sacked again. His own party hate his guts, he is not a mention of any faction, is an oddball and treats his staff like crap.

The bloke is an ego maniac and loves the public acclaim, this impending failure will have dawned on him and he just can't be and is not the same bloke he was in 2007.

Abbots last week has not been the greatest, not like him as he stayed very focused in 2010, some stupid comments although not real big ones the media are jumping on them.

Interesting news out of QLD

Labor's shock decision to recruit Peter Beattie as its candidate for the federal Queensland electorate of Forde appears to have backfired spectacularly, with the Coalition on track to win the seat in a landslide, The Australian Financial Review reports.
