correct-- the modern left is just a form of liberalism

I have said it before, there is no such thing as liberalism in the communist manifesto; the old left, precisely because it was not full of liberals would have advocated a strong welfare state, nationalisation and immigration restrictions.

This is true true left-wing social democratic tradition of the West, a tradition which all Westerners should identify with to some extent; over and above, especially, the identification with the lefts in Russia and Germany. They are just not part of the Australian/British socialist tradition.

Funny I thought this would be abt the debt, how it has developed and grown rather than a another series of rants abt the left or the the lackthereof! Oh well silly me!

no rant, it is why the ALP gets only a third of the primary vote; and, with on third of the primary vote they certainly wont be ruling on issues, such as, the extent, and how to deal with the debt.

You can respond all you like but the context of the post is always important, I often post stuff from the ABC and given the generally held opinion by folk on these pages that the ABC is a rampant left wing biased media outlet I preface stuff with similar comments, if you were not aware of that sobeit. The other point is that the subject was abt the debt but ..........

Ok fair enough.....I haven't been keeping up with the latest posts on here, so missed the sarcasm. As for debt, probably can't be repaid....EVER

grump: What do you think they should do about the debt? They will just finance it over time, helped in the short term by low interest rates. I Read, the other day, that the UK has actually finished paying for the First World War. Now for the rest of it, eh?

Ark I am not that smart (as most would have worked out already), the debt is a necessary issue just like in the GFC. I hope among other things that it is not politicised by either side. Both crisis required extraordinary actions and in many ways both parliaments have acted accordingly.

Yet it seems that like however many parliaments before the truth is a MIA and that I suppose opens it up to being used for ammunition. I would hope that Morrison and his cohorts (ain't that the popular word at the moment) fess up to the current state of our economy and finances and work from there!

The long term cost is a really big issue particularly with the downstream cost in the health system, it is the graying population anymore, it is the virus impact next year, 5 years from now!

My advice to all states would be live within your means!

Grump: fair enough too -- bringing in a tariff would bring in some extra revenue; i don't think it will get too ideological in Australia; I am glad we both don't live in America where everyone seems to want to spend money on welfare and warfare states and lower taxes. It is bloody amazing.
