The national debt will be/is massive but the Govt has in the vast majority of cases looked after the population well, yes there have been gaps in the system but we are dealing with a rapidly evolving situation that will continue to evolve, just seen a small second wave start up in NZ after 100 days of no cases, so planning for this thing is almost impossible.

The debt needs to be paid, but how will it be done, it needs to be a fair impost across the board where everyone pays a proportionately equal share, ie a levy similar to the medicare levy where, say a 1 or 2% levy on all taxpayers, that way it is proportionately fair someone on $30k pays the same % as someone on $1 mill. Dont want to see the GST go up as it's not proportionately fair, low income earners pay the same amount for a gst product as high income earners.

As for a levy, its an option but I think that it should proportional on the cost by state. Bit harsh but frankly at least one state has created the situation they are suffering from due to their ineptitude at ALL levels not just the premier!

The Left or Working Class Politicians as I knew them growing up in a hard core Labor blue collar family and area (Warfies in the family) were all about protecting wages and jobs by keeping cheap foreign labor out, making sure pay and conditions improved, sticking up for traditional big families and family values as a lot of old school Labor MPs were keen christians.

That is exactly what should happen, but we all know there reverse will happen and they will end up with an even bigger share to bail them out.

As for debt, the expert in the last few paragraphs is spot on, the cumulative effect of the inherited debt and the fact that the coalition tried to get the debt under control in the early years but was blocked by the Senate, sums up the state of things well..
