The next step is to use the points wisely with a player capable of dominating at this level.

I hope that we will start looking now for a replacement. The points must be used wisely.
Hopefully Masto will stay at the club in an off field role.

Easy to be critical in hindsight, and I'm not trying to be smart - I was excited when we announced Masten. But now... did we do our due diligence? It was said that Masten has no cartilage in his knee. That wouldn't have happened in the 11 games he played for us. Was it worth getting a 31 year old with bad knees? Do we look too much at ex AFL players rather than state league? Some of the best players in the WAFL now are Bolton, Fisher, Anderson, Delahunty, Kitchin. Many of our best recruits have been state league players - Young, JKT, Bossong. If we are going to get older AFL players, I think we should stick to one point players. At least if they don't work out, we haven't given up much. So next season, for example, by all get, say, Dean Kent back if he's delisted, but don't go after Vardy or Hutchings or Hill.

I know it's hard. there are not that many players available, and other clubs are competing for them as well. But the fact remains that this season we used a total of 42 points on Masten, Smith and Loersch, all of whom are injury prone, plus Langlands, who has yet to prove he is up to this level. Meanwhile, a young one point player in English slipped through our fingers. No doubt we have been unlucky over the years, with Gaspar, Damon White, Spencer White (much maligned, but would have won the Naylor if fit for a full season), and now Masten barely playing through injury, and guys like Davis, Reimers, and Graham playing for only a year before giving up. But is it happening so often that you can say we are going after the wrong players? Clint Jones is a notable exception, but otherwise, we do not have a happy record with ex AFL players.

Don't forget the Morton triplets Ted.....

When Perth were 5-0 last year you guys weren't complaining one iota... I'd be blaming Scott Spalding for offering Masto that vino job STT, not his brother Earl or Bobby and the board for getting Masto to the club......you Perth boys never learn......never ever recruit ex EF players....history is there for a reason you know.

I think it was worth a shot..his 1st four games before getting injured last year were dominant and he was a big reason why we had enough wins to make the finals last year.
Well done to him for seeing the writing on the wall and pulling the pin quickly.

I categorically agree. No more ex AFL players over 26 please unless 1 point. They either don't hang around or too injury prone.

You're obsessed with the Mortons, Freezin. For what it's worth, Jarrod (who approached us after a couple of years in the Ammos) was a very solid for 3-4 seasons. Cale was young enough to make his recruitment worthwhile. Mitch, however, exemplifies the problem I have with older ex AFL guys - he was cooked physically and really had nothing to play for.

It's mostly bad luck, and I'm sure every club has it's own stories of dud recruits. (except Subi) Was Wellingham worth the 12 for EP? What about that ex basketball project player you guys picked up - Riach? - who didn't know one end of a footy from the other? I acknowledge again that recruiting is not easy, but I think Perth should refrain from picking up ex AFL players over the age of, say, 27, or anyone with a significant injury history, unless they are returning locals.

TN what you're asking is smart use of points.
That is where we need to change.

Perth got excellent value from a Sydney swans player in recent times. Name escapes me. Tough. Loyal. Blonde hair.
