Absolute vandalism by Barnett and co by starting this project without going to the people first and knowing they were heading for a shellacking last Sat. Any cost or job lost is squarely on his shoulders!

Swandog, the libs went to the people with this project as a policy 8 years ago and again 4 years ago and both times received a resounding mandate. The only reason this project was never started was due to the endless court cases by the labor/greens coalition. Shame as they would all be driving up and down it now extolling its virtues and happy that all the big trucks are no longer wreaking havoc on Leach Hwy.

Oh well it gave them enough time and let them spout enough bullshit and eventually things change. This was like Gough's "it's time" election win, the libs got tired in enough peoples minds.

I wonder if Sneakers and his Greens & union masters will feel any sort of remorse when the next person gets killed or injured on Leach Hwy by a heavy haulage truck.

Rubbish. We are at the point where building more main roads will just encourage more people to drive, more cars and more freight on the road. Move it to rail like normal people.
And if you have to build a new hwy at least have it fully planned out and transparent.

Also I dont recall the last time someone was killed on leach hwy by a heavy haulage vehicle. I drive it twice a day and it has nothing on the horrible traffic of Melbourne.

Yeah there was a good article written on this yesterday, showing that consistently more roads just fill with more congestion, same pattern around the world. Roe Hwy east of Kwinana Freewaty is already crap imagine what it would of been like packing all the Semi's from Leach Hwy onto it for the next 10 - 20 years, locking in the cluster fark of Freo Container Port for the foreseeable future

There is no doubt North Freo, East Freo, and Leach Hwy are shitehouse at the moment, but locking the port in into freo for another 10 to 20 years and pumping more traffic into North Freo is bloody madness,- knowing full well they have to go eventually. Btw all Roe 8 would of done was diverted Trucks down Stock Rd so all the crap was still flowing up and down Leach and High St Stirling Hwy south of Stock.

I don't like WA Labor much, but at least on this point they had a genuine long term viable plan to solve the situation and give the entire state a massive boast trade and efficiently wise with the new Indian Ocean Gateway Plan.

Freo inner harbour needs to regenerated as a major cruise port, along with a marina and surrounding hospitality, residential and tourism.

I was in Liverpool UK last year and this is what they have done there, the Container Port was moved to the mouth of the Mersey and the inner harbour is all about Cruise Ships and Tourism.

I've always been non-plussed at the complete disregard for rail ex-Fremantle port - much the land that held the original trackwork south of Fremantle is still available , to ease any congestion & surely it must be re-visited

recent and historical studies and both sides of politics admit that any new port at Cockburn will be an overflow facility only and the port of Freo will remain the primary gateway to WA...so any talk of a new port will be to take the stuff Freo can't handle. on that basis alone ROE 8 and 9 should have gone ahead as the traffic into and out of Freo will get worse before it gets better.

BC, not sure what studies they are but this doesn't look like a over flow facility to me.

indianoceangateway.com.au/

As for both sides of politics - Labor has committed itself to the regeneration of the inner harbour. With full support of all the surrounding local governments.

People talk about using rail to bring product into the Port but there are strict restrictions on how live animals are moved, I'll stand corrected but I understand they cannot be moved by rail, only by road. The live sheep export industry is just about the biggest export out of the Port and worth multi millions to the state and can only be transported there by road, so the animal welfare boffins will need to look at that before rail becomes a viable option.

hahahaha....I see the Beags were relying on 6 year old data to deny the presence of protected black cockatoos when clearing trees at their new Lathlain facility when in fact they're everywhere these days and the development is destroying their habitat. where's all the mungbeans now? why aren't there protesters chaining themselves to equipment, crapping in workers cars, climbing up trees, looney left supporters holding rallies with Labor and Greens in full support? what a joke the whole Roe fiasco was....if anyone suggests it wasn't politically rather than environmentally driven then you're living in a parallel universe.
