Incredible. Our Labor government has given a grant of 10 million towards the development in Cockburn..Cost 114m.. 65m by the Cockburn Council which is understandable considering the benefits to the area. 10m by the Dockers who were one are one of the highest grossing clubs in the WAFL. The AFL contribution???

Now lets look at the seat. It comes under the Labor seat of Fremantle held by Melissa Parke. In the last election there was a huge swing to the Liberals. Very convenient that this grant came at this time.

Extract from the article

The Federal Government has kicked in $10 million towards the Fremantle Dockers' plan for a new $114 million training centre.

On a flying visit to Perth, Prime Minister Julia Gillard visited the proposed site of the new training and leisure facility in Cockburn.

The decision comes after presentations by Dockers bosses in Canberra earlier this month during the AFL's Hall of Fame celebrations.

The multi-million dollar contribution to the $114 million state-of-the-art facility at Cockburn Central West follows an announcement in December 2012 that the Dockers had reached a heads of agreement with the City of Cockburn to develop the club’s new elite training and administration facility at the 26,000sqm green field site.

My thoughts

The whole things stinks  This money could of gone to sports that are struggling including Junior clubs etc.. Gee the WAFL clubs could of picked up over million each (yeh joking :) )
It is another case of Labor wasting money when they can ill afford it.
They are trying to prop up the seat for the upcomming election?

Your feedback on this issue?

Gee why arent I suprised.. Like a dog at a bone but fair enough ;)

I realise it will have other facilites for the community and did say it is good for Cockburn. Not an issue.
The side of politics people are on has nothing to do with it either. My point is the money should of been elsewhere and another example of the Quail burning money that could of been used elsewhere.. Lets not start a political argument as thread will go to shit but strange how it has gone to a Now marginal Labor seat.
The rest of you arguements are Hypothetical as it is going ahead.
I one who reckons having the ground at Cockburn is a great idea.
A lot you say is right in regards to employment etc in the area but that is not the Topic of this thread. Dont want another Thread like the one in General re Abbott.

My point is the money should of been used elsewhere if at all.
I can remember when John Dawkins was around years ago and that female minster (what was her name? Think it was Roz Kelly) Was the minister for sport and the Labour party gave money to all the struggling Amateur and junior clubs.. We got a great new clubhouse at Winnacott for the Melville Braves and the Footy team. It was certainly needed. That money was spread amongst a lot of struggling clubs who were just managing to keep their head above water.
Now that was a brilliant Government initiative and appreciated by many not just the City of Cockburn and the Dockers.

Ok agree with all those points. And they were going ahead whether they got a 10 million dollar grant anyway. The project was not at risk and the 10 million had nothing to do with the project getting off the ground and it is going ahead.

I think you are missing the point. In a nutshell Gillard had no right to make the handout and why out of all the deserving charities and issues would SHE and her government decide to give it to the Dockers???

I agree Cardy what a complete waste of tax payers money! ..if Freo want a new training facility they should pay for it themselves. I would much rather the $10 million was spent on the 7 WAFL clubs who are fair dinkum about their local communities!

This has nothing to do with the AFL, as the WAFC own the Dockers licence. State pollies in the Fremantle area would have worked in with the Federal Government on sporting grants and used a successful club like the Dockers to get the funds across the line. The benefits of this would have been sold as a boost for junior sport at grassroots level in the area.

You and AM have tunnel vision and do not even get the point. The WAFC does own the licences to both WA sides and the WAFC is state government so what does that have to do with the Federal ALP?
So they selected a club that is successful and has plenty of money - So why not put the money to use in other areas

It is all a political stunt at a cost to the Australian Taxpayer whether they support the Dockers or even the AFL for that matter.

A boost to junior sport? Why didnt they put it all into Junior sport and not just the Dockers project and benefit just the Dockers zone benefiting the Dockers.

You both come up with arguments that are politically motivated..But do not answer the questions I put in my original post.. which was just a political stunt to support the sitting member. I suspect if it was a safe Liberal seat the money would of gone elsewhere!
