Good points, Mike, the touring party may well be only 16 with the option of replacing injured players from those Aussies playing County Cricket (Mike Whitney in 1981 and Shaun Young in 1997 to name but two).
And given England is having a warm summer by its standards, Old Trafford and The Oval may well be dust bowls come September, so Jon Holland could be a worthy inclusion.

Going off that match alone and tour form so far....which isn't saying much batting wise....the test 11 should be
Warner Bancroft Uzzie Smith Wade Marsh Paine Pattinson Cummins Siddle Hazlewood with Lyon/Starc 12 th man
Obviously won't be like that....but would love to see the four fast boys let loose early on to get some early inroads into denting that Eng confidence...esp with Anderson not fit nor Wood or Archer early on....whilst Aust batting line up looks shaky, Ireland have shown Eng is no better...Leach the leggie scoring 90 odd opening after batting 11 in the first dig....strange if you ask me....and sure indication Eng have no idea of their batting line up.....

Would love to see Bancroft and Warner back together as an opening pair. Bancroft has shown in the trial match he can play a test match type innings and that would give the poms something to shout about!!!

Australia's Ashes squad: Tim Paine (c), Cameron Bancroft, Pat Cummins, Marcus Harris, Josh Hazlewood, Travis Head, Usman Khawaja, Marnus Labuschagne, Nathan Lyon, Mitchell Marsh, Michael Neser, James Pattinson, Peter Siddle, Steven Smith, Mitchell Starc, Matthew Wade, David Warner.

Had I not chosen Alex Carey and picked Marcus Harris instead, I would've had an identical 17 to the selectors.
Still, I think it was a squad that largely picked itself, with only a few spots open to debate.
State representation: NSW = 6, Qld = 3, SA = 1, Tas = 2, Vic = 3, WA = 2

I still think they should have picked a 2nd spinner (Holland) to cover the scenario of a dustbowl at Old Trafford or the Oval

Holland is average Mike I think they have picked Labushagne as that second spinner.

On paper that Eng test squad bowling wise looks pretty potent....tho Archer hasn't played in the long format for 12 months apparently, Anderson whilst all class is coming off an injury and at 37 might need the bowl.....Broad is always dangerous v Aust in UK conditions....Woakes is the surprise packet for me.....his mojo is sky high......

Warner Bancroft Uzzie Smith Head Wade ( tho he was told to bat top 4 if he wanted a test gig....LOL) Paine Pattinson Cummins Lyon Hazlewood

Burns Roy Root Denly Bairstow Buttler Stokes Woakes Moen Broad Anderson

Sounds a bit negative but given that Edgbaston is a bit of a hoodoo ground for Australian teams, I think they would be happy to get out of this one with a draw and go to Lords at 0 - 0. They may end up going with Mitch Marsh instead of Wade to provide the 5th bowling option but this makes our batting look very threadbare.
