Gonna be a tight 4th and final day...New ball crucial....nice and tight by the Aussie bowlers on day 3, -which hopefully will get it's rewards with the new ball on day 4....funny how certain scenarios have a habit of repeating themselves at certain grounds.....game on as they say...

Addit...just read the weather report....30° for day 4....nice spring day in Perth....going to be pretty warm in Leeds....don't envy the bowlers task TBH...especially when the new ball softens.....

Root is the key. If he makes 150 England win. If Australia can get 3 wickets with the new ball they should go on to claim the ashes. A very finely balanced game. One thing the English batsmen have done well since the first test is how they have neutralised Lyon.

The dumbest review the worst run out attempt and a spineless non lbw by the ump. Stokes is officially a legend.

What horrible cricket from Australia in the last few overs.

- Harris, dropped catch, though a pretty hard one
- wasting a review on an LBW decision on a ball that clearly pitched well outside leg
- Lyon's fumble on the easy run-out
- no reviews left for an LBW that was quite clear to everyone on the field but the umpire

Well played Stokes and the Poms - on to Old Trafford.

Well played Ben Stokes and Jack Leach, but - fair dinkum - I don't think I've seen a bigger choke than this in Australian cricket.
I could tell the LBW decision against Leach that Pat Cummins and Tim Paine referred had pitched outside leg stump.
And Nathan Lyon - the run-out fumble was unforgiveable given the time he had to take the ball and dislodge the bails.
The momentum this has given them will see England go on and regain the Ashes.
Geez, wouldn't it be wonderful to have an all-rounder like Stokes.
Hopefully he gets on the piss before the Fourth Test and is locked up for a month.

Best innings I have seen in an ashes test assisted by some clueless captaincy and panic fielding. Can't see Paine being in the team for much longer. They had at least five opportunities to break that last partnership. If Paine had not reviewed that stupid LBW in the 2nd last over they still would have snatched it with that howler not out. Can't see Australia recovering from that.

well done England -- not many teams have won a test match after being dismissed for 60 in the first innings. Well done to the attack for bowling out Australia twice in two days.

I do believe that the score would be the highest for England to win an Ashes test match on the fourth innings. (332-7 28-29 was the previous)

I agree with you there, Mike, Ben Stokes' innings of two parts would have to be up there with the best in Ashes history.
The cleanness of his hitting brought back memories of Ian Botham's brilliant knock in the 1981 Headingley Test.
They both may be boorish and not particularly endearing blokes, but wouldn't Australia love an all-rounder like Botham or Stokes.
Of course, Adam Gilchrist struck the ball just as well at the WACA in 2006, but his 57-ball century came against a demoralised and inept England team (which the 2019 outfit is clearly not).
Given the only two sporting teams I seriously care about are the Australian cricket team and the East Perth Football Club (and I can forget about the Royals for a while), this Test loss is equivalent to being 10 goals up at three-quarter-time only to lose by a point.
Well done to England for keeping the series alive, but it was a three-act farce at the finish: (1) the LBW referral howler; (2) Lyon fumbling a run-out that an Under-10 cricketer would've managed; (3) an umpiring shocker perhaps influenced by the official's fear of upsetting the home crowd.
That said, if (1) and (2) hadn't of occurred (i.e. Aussie stuff-ups), (3) wouldn't have been a factor.
Since Tim Paine scored an unbeaten 61 against Pakistan in Dubai almost a year ago, he's made 299 runs at an average of 18.06.
That's just not acceptable for a bloke batting at No.7.
Yes, Tim might be a nice bloke and a good wicketkeeper, but I think Day 4 at Headingley exposed serious flaws in his captaincy.
I believe he has to see out the series, but surely Alex Carey - after his superb batting during the World Cup - must come in during the Australian summer.
If Paine goes, it begs the question of who should be captain (Travis Head?).
And would he only be a stopgap skipper until Steve Smith takes over again (if this is Cricket Australia's plan)?
Thank goodness the Aussies have a game against Derbyshire to regroup.
How Australia fares in the last two Tests will also be a reflection on Justin Langer's coaching ability.
Selection wise, we need an all-rounder, so I reckon Mitch Marsh (though not in Stokes' league) should come in.
I think we have to play Mitch Starc instead of either James Pattinson (most likely) or Pat Cummins (who had a poor final day at Headingley).
Obviously Smith returns and will need to score a first-innings century to help out the rest of the batsmen who, Marnus Labuschagne aside, had modest games in Leeds.
Here's a possible XI for Old Trafford: Warner, Khawaja, Labuschagne, Smith, Head, Marsh, Paine, Cummins, Starc, Lyon and Hazlewood.
