well done to Sri Lanka. The Africans botched the test from the start when they played only five batsmen plus De kock, it was asking for trouble in terms of whether they would make enough runs, One should also blame the captain, because he should have kept a conventional field and tried to get the wicket and both ends. Full and at off stop would have been the order of the day.

The test also shows, in light of all the fast bowlling bumpers by the Africans, how much helmets have changed the game. In simple terms, the Africans would have won that match reasonably easily without helmets as Perrara was hit very badly two or three times and would have been 'absent injurred' in the score book.

That was truly one of the great test match finishes. For Perera to bring the final runs up with a six off Steyn and a four off Rabada was just sensational. Funny game cricket. They look shiteful during their tour here but a new captain and a couple of debutants and they play like a different side.

That win is even more meritorious given the diabolical batting of the Sri Lankan No. 11 Vishwa Fernando who surely has to now claim the title of the worst No. 11 ever to play test cricket. He tried to duck just about everything Steyn bowled at him and when he wasn't doing that he was keeping the square leg ump company jumping out of the way of the ball. Only one scoring shot in his entire innings and he ended up with a 5 for it from 4 over throws! That test had it all!

Jim Higgs has now officially been relieved of the title.

Dazzler just heard the tail-end of them talking about Pierre's innings V RSA.On Maquarie sports radio..Some cricket analysts put his innings in the top 5 innings in test history.Alan Border in that list with test centurys in the West Indies in the mid 1980's.So is Sunny Gavaskar for 100's scored in the Windies.

Don't get carried away lads -- he played bloody well and got his team over the line and full credit to him, but others have played better innings for Australia in South Africa

Mark E Waugh at Port Elizabeth
MIke Clarke at Cape Town

both on very dodgy pitches unlike the one Perara batted on

What about Stokes 250 odd?

They said the best test innings ever was 1971-72.The rest of the world v Australia. In Melbourne in the first innings Lillee bowled 5 bouncers to Sir Garfield Sobers.Got him out for 0 on the 5th ball.
Second innings Sir Garfield scored 256 not out. With 150 runs in boundaries. The best innings in Australia that Sir Donald Bradman had seen.

gtr: yep good one -- IM Chappell
has a top three of the following:

Sobers
Pollock -- 274
Hughes -- 100 not out

In my time, Brian Lara played a couple of innings against Australia which were very good too.

Right up there for me Ark was Ricky Ponting Manchester 2005.Againt a really good English attack. That bowled really well that day.Simon Jones bowled M Clarke with a fantastic ball that day.

Not a bad start from the Sri Lankans in the 2nd Test already having SA 2/15 including Amla cleaned bowled for a golden duck from a inswinger by the left armer Fernando who is now on a hat-trick...and he nearly got it too!

Edit: make that SA now 3/15 after winning the toss and electing to bat and being already 1-0 down in the series.

SriLanka are 2-60 at stumps. They need another 137 to win the second test. And go 2-0 up in the series.
Haha Sri Lanka has not lost a wicket today. And this partnership only needs 57 to win. With 8 wickets in hand.
