I think they misread the pitch Mikey and thought it would turn more than it did.

They picked Connolly to strengthen the batting coming in at 8 and to provide support to the 2 first choice spinners Lyon & Kuhnemann.
I dont rate Murphy and he was innocuous in the 1st Test, the only wicket he got was Kunaratne shouldering arms to a straight one that didnt turn. 

It's an interesting one BH.....like Santner, Kuhnemann is innocuous outside the subcontinent....whilst Murphy looks a better bowler outside the subcontinen....but innocuous inside....only a young fella, so still time to deliver....Rocchiccioli a few years older, hopefully will get a look in sooner rather than later.....oh for a leggie.....hopefully TSangha delivers in the near future.

At 3 for 91 chasing 257, the game was at a delicate point but Smith and Carey blew Sri Lanka away with the 240 run partnership. Outstanding by both players. Been a triumphant return to the captaincy for Smith and he must rank very highly on the list of non Asian batsmen in the sub continent.
Unless Sri Lanka can come storming back with the new ball tomorrow, they are looking down the barrel of conceding 500+ for the 2nd test in a row. Plenty of batting to come for Australia so their aim will be to bat only once in this match. Carey will never get a better chance to post a test double ton.

SL will be looking for quick wickets today first up....get the 3 test newbies in and hopefully roll them......though one of the newbies already has a ton under his belt, so be interesting to see how they go. SL wouldn't want to have a deficit of anything more than 150 at worst.....whilst Aust would be looking to bat most of day 3, build up a 250 + lead minimum and hopefully capitalize on the deteriorating wicket.

Smith in superlative form, whilst Carey looked more than good with his ton, scoring at a decent lick.....the SL team looked very dispirited come stumps....probably as dispirited as Marnus felt, watching from the sheds, after missing out again.....tick tock tick tock for Marnus.....surely?

Well SL got the pre lunch session they wanted. This game could be over by stumps....Aust won't want to bat again that's fir sure

Been a solid day 3 by Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka showing far more backbone in this innings - they have a small lead now 

Lucky that partnership between Smith and Carey was so prolific. Not a  lot from anyone else. The batting today had a touch of carelessness and complacency and failed to bat Sri Lanka out of the game.
At one stage in the last session Sri Lanka had a lead of 40 with 2 set batsmen and 5 wickets in hand. Luckily the bowlers were able to prize out 3 wickets in the last 40 minutes and now there will be a small chase tomorrow as long as Mendis doesnt do something out of the box.
Still there should be some reflection tonight of how the Australians let a position of total dominance slip somewhat.
