PS The big D's Easter isn't always on the gazetted Easter Public Holidays.

If a player cant/doesnt want to play for religious reasons then I have no doubt that the coaches of said players would honour that and not name them for the good Friday game.

Aren't we a country of choice?? As for the AFL getting desperate, what a load of rubbish. The AFL have wanted this for years, but were stopped by one man. Now they have a new, forward looking boss and the long awaited event has final come to fruit.

Yeah coutry of choice, perhaps as its no big deal the day and all that then you could just make a choice and go to work rather than take a day off for what is given purely for religious reasons, theres no other reason good friday is a public holiday apart from religious, why bother having it as a public holiday at all anymore as we are a secular country and just treat it like any other day now.

I think they should have a special match on christmas day as well. Have the umpires dress up as father christmas, great marketing idea, the afl will make millions of $. thats what it is all abount now innnit.

I think people are over reacting to this. The NRL have been doing it for years, its nothing new.

And churchies really get on their soapbox's, which I find amazing considering every weekend of every year the church is on show. Football is 6 months of the year, church is 12 months.

Games on Christmas Day and all of that fluff, well what are we talking about here its just getting silly. And telling people they should go to work on Good Friday if they are not religious. Well then lets go to work on the Queens Birthday because we don't bow to her holiness, Or go to work on Labour Day because (Dunno what that day is to be honest) But I will take it.

Its a 2 hour footy game, its not the end of mankind for Christ sake.

Yeah , why dont we just have rolling 24/7 footy games 352 days of the year , that way rhe AFL could maximise its return...

yeah taking it just as a day off - with no knowledge at all of the meaning, pretty much sums this up...pity players won't have the luxury.

Btw labor Day marks the 8 hour working day ...

Queends Birthday is not even celebrated in UK with a public holiday, no idea why we do here, thats another one that should go,,in any case both these days are secular national holidays that everyone can mark..regardless of religion.

the only reason Easter and Christams are holidays are purely due to theur religious meaning, and date from a time when 90% of Australians identified themselves as Christians and 80% went to church on a regular basis, the reason people were given the day off was to make religious observations.

the biggest religion now is money, and fatest growing is No Religion..

so what relevance is any longer? as a few on here have said they will just use it a day off to go to the footy.

Why are Muslims forced to take an obselete Christian Dayy off?? if most Australians will be drinking piss at the footy and dont give a rats arse,,,

Perhaps its time we just ditched it all togther as we are no longer a christian country in practice.,
