I have been called a white C*NT by some intoxicated patrons of the lovely city of Perth streets....but that would not be considered racist....if I was to turn around and call them black C*NTS, then all hell would break loose, that would be racist and no doubt I would be on the front cover of the WEST.

I see that their is a lot of discrimination.....beding treated unequal....but it happens both ways so get over it.

Harry O'Brien quotes

'A lot of people don't understand why I feel this way'
"Every day I will experience a form of racial discrimination, whether it is through social media or walking on the street.

"Or there will be someone in their car - that is the courage they will have - they will yell something out at me'

"This is not just about Adam Goodes,''

"When that young girl said that thing (calling Goodes an ape), she may as well have said it to myself and Andrew Krakouer and Lewis Jetta, and anyone else who would find that offensive.

"This is a far greater issue, something that people like myself experience regularly.

"It is casual. Whether it is indirectly or historically, we experience it because it's almost like our racial discrimination has been hidden under larrikinism.''

"People aren't taught about the struggles of other people and why they would want to leave their country as a refugee or asylum seeker.

"They're not taught the real history of indigenous people. This is a national issue and it starts at the top.''

I think people need to use this opportunity to educate themselves about exactly why this has caused so much grief to Adam Goodes who is a highly successful person in his chosen career and seemingly with a very high level of self esteem, instead of rushing to judgement that he has overreacted. Talk to some Aboriginal people perhaps or do some research. Is there some history here perhaps or maybe if you dig a bit deeper you may come to realise why calling someone a black____ has more sting on it than calling someone a white_____. Ask a stolen generation person who was ripped away from their mother when they were a baby. Anything but trotting out the same tired old stereotypes peddled on redneck radio Even though there are a lot of white people doing it hard at least they don't have to worry every day about being judged on the basis of the colour of their skin.

That is purely because in a reverse way, even the law nowadays is NOT EQUAL. Where does the notion of repsonsibilty for ones own actions come in?. Wierd thing is nowdays the race card is a GOLD PASS, and many people use it as such to abstain themselves from any responsibilty. All white mans fault AGAIN??? i assume

Exactly. I get a bit teed off when soon as things don't certain people's way, the R card comes out. Take a hard look around - racism is not a one way street.

For Indigenous round how about we have an Indigenous Gaelic team? With Tom Wills being Irish decent, I'm sure this is where the game has its Gaelic similarities from?

Just think we could have the the surnames O'Loughlin or O'Brien could play and be proud of their oppressed heritage.

To clarifiy the meaning of Indigenous - Indigenous peoples are ethnic minorities who have been marginalised as their historical territories became part of a state.

Mike.

Yes BH you are most definitely missing something. Given the historical treatment of the indigenous people of Australia over the last 200 odd years and given the referendum of 1967 and Mabo ruling of even more recent times it is indeed incumbent upon us as a nation to avoid references which relate to the supposed inferior intellectual capabilities of non-whites. As I mentioned in another post people should use Harry O'Brien's comments on AFL 360 last night as a very good insight into the problems we are facing at this point in time with respect to our treatment of minorities.

It also needs to be noted that the degradation of a minority, either verbally or physically, has a far greater impact than when that is targetted at a majority.

With respect to Eddie Maguire's comments; he will get his justified criticism for his comments. However, one should also take what he has said in the context of what he has done over his career. When that is done, one can get a truer indication of whether it is an aberration or typical of his behaviour.

As a counterpoint to Eddie Maguire's comments I would refer people to the last Media Watch programme and the comments made by Alan Jones on a regular basis.

With all due respects 42 you have completely missed the point I was making!

Indigenous people are those native to the land. Aboriginals for Australia.
Many of us may be indigenous to England. Are we to participate in indigenous round also. O'Brien seems to think its ok to, although indigenous to South America. Why dont they just call it as it is?

BH I don't think I have, but we can discuss it at Lathlain tomorrow. The point is that calling someone a 'ranga' because of the colour of their hair is not comparable to calling someone an ape because historically there was a view that non-whites were considered intellectually inferior to whites.
