A/man I was watching FOX Sports so I can't comment on how Channel 7 handled the situation. With respect to the how it was handled on the night I don't think I have any problems there. I do believe that subsequent media handling should not have named or shown her face given that she was only 13 years of age.

With respect to articulating what was actual said, I suspect that it would have the greatest impact by showing that such terms are offensive and should not be used. Certainly a recent Media Watch programme highlighted a phrase used by Jones which is highly offensive and should not be used at anytime in today's society.

Interestingly, Rebecca Wilson, who it must be said in my opinion sinks lower in my estimation each week, had no problems with the publishing of her name and photo. Further she went on to say that if the same treatment had been her dished out her daughter under similar circumstances. The mind boggles. Certainly a person of 13 years of age should be counselled and shown that what was sain was entirely inappropriate. Hopefully, it will see a greater sensitivity as a consequence.

With respect to Maguire he did what he should be congratulated for his actions.

Been thinking about this too. Goodes should have simply walked over and shook her hand. It would have been far more positive.

I really still do not know what to make of it... have we gone forward, or have we gone backwards because of this?

Mike.

Hmmm, racial nature....
If I called Goodesy a tyre would I have villified him?
Technically speaking 'ape' is not part of the racial dictionary.
Porch Monkey is racially associated with American negroes, some similarity I 'spose, but a stretch.
A 13 yr old girl broke down the 6ft4 multi millionaire to almost tears.
What if she called him a dog, racial villification?
Any animal will do... Poor me syndrome seems to echo.
I dont blame Goodesy for the outcry, it is all the medias fault.
Abuse is still abuse at the end of the day.

So now i suppose Both Gary Lyon (Hairy Gary) and Jason Dunstall (Chief, primate, Babboon) will come out this week and claim that they have been targeted all these years. Time to take a chill pill people and move on. For what's it's worth, i thought Goodes went over the top a little bit last friday. whether or not he thought he had a chance on the big stage during indigenous round to make a stand, his carry on afterwards was a little far fetched and then for the Swans to come out the next day and say that they were concerned for his mental state as he was still "distressed" - you got the point across boys now time to move on

It is a bit rich saying Adam Goodes was over the top, unless you are prepared to put yourself in someone elses shoes which a lot of people don't do before they pass judgement. If I was indigenous I "imagine" I would find that highly offensive. His actions and the apology of the girl and Adam's acceptance of her apology is the perfect outcome and everyone is a winner.

As for McGuire, the bloke has a massive ego and that gets in the way of his intelligence a lot of the time.

This was the biggest overreaction to something that I have ever seen not just in football but in sport general. The only one who acted like a 13 year old was Goodsey and all who jumped on the bandwagon afterwards. The whole thing was completely blown out of proportion at the game, after the game and by all media outlets involved.

Well done to Andrew Demetriou for coming out and condemning all involved........An embarrassment into how the media and a society of 'precious people' pass judgement on the rest of us.

People get discriminated on a daily basis for a million worse things than this and for it to play out like it did was a disgrace!

I wonder how many people who have made comment on this issue have felt the pain of being discriminated against simply because of the colour of their skin?. If you haven't experienced this you are in no position to judge whether or not Adam Goodes has overreacted in this situation

MikeH - Where in all of this was Goodes discriminated against because of Skin colour. He was upset at being called an ape just like Dunstall is every week on various footy shows around town. He totally overplayed the situation due to the significance of it being indigenous round!

Leggo33, there is a historical context to the comparison between black people and monkeys/apes in a derogatory/dehumanising way. Have a look at the attached which shows that even Barack Obama and his wife were portrayed as apes in an election campaign.
