If ever there was any need to have proof of just what the WAFC think of the WAFL it is there for everyone to see in today's West headed "WA system needs to be tweaked for the future".

Every quote of Frank Cooper in the report by Mark Duffield just shows how out of touch with what WAFL supporters want from the WAFl competition.

How does having two clubs aligned to the WA domiciled AFL clubs enhance the development prospects of the juniors coming through those two WAFL clubs? Who made that decision?

How ridiculous that clubs and their players and supporters would want their footy team to try to win footy matches?

Doesn't happen often Swan but we are in agreement on this one. The arrogance of these guys is gobsmacking. To use the WAFL as a play thing for the AFL teams, to push them back into a development league rather than a full genuine competitive league. If they want a proper development stream then the AFL needs to put money into the Colts comp with more money for the clubs football departments that is used for high quality coaching and support staff, not on the same scale but similar to the TAC cup. It cant be left for the clubs to do all the work.

SS thanks. I should add that my comments were very temperate compared to my uncensored view of Messrs Cooper, Walton et al.

His comments were a disgrace and utterly disrespectful to the wafl and its clubs brilliant work over the decades. To suggest and be critical that the clubs put more effort into winning the flag than promoting juniors is completely irrational. I've always been of the view a bloke shouldn't get a game of league unless he's in the best 22 available on the day regardless of age or ladder position.
Here's a suggestion for the recruiting departments of all afl clubs - look past your obsession with blokes aged 19 or under and more closely at the "mature" age players, like the 23 year old sandover medallist for example.
Jeez, if Patrick Mcginnity is good enough to be entering into an eighth season of afl - there's about a hundred blokes in the wafl right now that are completely superior footballers to him.

The other thing Frank Cooper doesn't realise is that there is a subtle change occuring at the afl level with regard to talent identification and age. Afl clubs are finally beginning to understand that the current draft age is so young that it stacks the odds against you. As a result clubs are finally more prepared to pick the blokes that either developed a bit later or for whatever reason missed under-age representative teams but by 21 or 22 are great footballers. I believe we will see more of this because many afl clubs can't afford to go 'all in' with 17 year olds at every draft because they potentially face years in the wilderness if only a few kids come good.

How do guys like Adams and Broad become the players they have Frank? By playing against men in a vigorous and proud semi-professional competition where your club winning actually matters and means something to people. Copper just doesn't get this. An under-23 comp or something similar would eventually kill footy in this state. For 25 years the wafl and afl have worked against each other and look at the results in WA. The afl needs the wafl far more than it thinks it does. Soccer is growing rapidly and footy is being abandoned at the lower playing levels.

Make no mistake 42 this WAFC administration will go down with the buffoons back in 86 & 96 who rushed into the WCE & Peel era's as the most useless, inept of all time!

BH the unfortunate part is that I don't think it will make any difference; one is replaced by another - both have no interest in the WAFL competition or WAFL clubs per se.

The only reason we will have a final 5 next year is because they realise that if there was a final 4 only one position in the four would be available for the G6 clubs.

And apparently if one believes what's written in the press, Cheryl Edwards is ready to replace him? Wonder how much Wafl experience she has? If not, why is she allowed on the board? Is the current poor state of the Wafl her main focus. If not, why not! There are huge issues the so called commission need to tackle. Will the new replacement (whoever it may be) roll their sleeves up and work with/ support the Wafl? I hope the new appointment is not someone whose only there to ride the tax payer funded gravy train.
