In regards to our own state, although mistakes have been made from 1986 onwards, the biggest problem is in the mentality of the public. We have too many 'I was people'; that, is 'I was a South supporter' or 'I was a 'SD supporter'. If another sports fad hit town in coming decades, those same people would abandon the WCE and Fremantle soon enough.

This is absolutely spot on. For some reason South Australians seem to hold onto their sanfl loyalties a lot more than west Australians. I've met quite a few crow eaters through playing amateurs and country footy and through various jobs over the years, when you ask them what Sanfl club they support they have an answer quick as a flash - "centrals", "roosters"... Ask a west Aussie - " oh I used to go for.... But I havent been to a game for twenty years

26,000 at the SANFL GF , 13,000 WAFL.

might be they don't have a very negative g7 over there.they have embraced the crows and port having stand alone teams and have bigger crowds at the gf's and have had two traditional teams win the last two premierships. The wafl hasn't been damaged by the eagles and dockers. It began it's huge decline with more players leaving to play in the vfl from the early eighties onwards and crowds stopped going to wafl games.state of origin games reminded us that the wafl was becoming a second rate comp.

C22 you surely are not suggesting that fewer players go to the AFL (VFL) now than prior to 1987? Could you please provide statistics vis a vis crowd attendances prior to 1987 which support your assertion.

Wow thats a pretty damning statistic Bazza, especially given the population of Perth is much higher than that of Adelaide. Can we borrow some of the SANFL people and get them to fix up our comp?

No AFL Prelims in Adelaide plus $ubi being in the GF doesn't help
Beneath the Southern cross i stand, on Bassendean Oval, can in hand, Swan Districts, you Farkin Beauty!

I picked up your error Swan 42, but mentioning Subiaco to have two teams in the top four is feasible on talent.

I think it would be a perfect solution:
1. WCE introduce a standalone side.
2. Peel continue as Freo's side, renamed and moved to Cockburn.

10 Team competition, perfect solution.
Had the Presidents of the 8 league clubs not been so bloody minded this could have happened in the fist place.

Don't start me LB.
The WAFL's inaction on years and years of Subi rorting the salary cap is ludicrous.
Hopefully the new stadium will end Subi's priviliged financial position.
Double the income of most other Clubs.
One of sports major disgraces.

there is not going to be enough money or decent players going around for 10 teams.

without the Eagles, East Perth would have no future unless they move out into their zone.
once Subi's money dries up you would have to think they would have to consider basing themselves in their zone instead of Leederville though they will still need a city base to house all their recuits.

if we take money out of the equation the 3 clubs with the best future prospects of survival are Swans, WP and Cl.
If SF and EF can make a go of sharing Freo oval they should be set up well also as they wouldnt be far from all their junior clubs.
Swans and WP are the only 2 clubs who are in the heartland of their district clubs and can sell themselves as a community club.
Cl will always be ok due to the zones and private schools they have.
