No 7 Ok I am biased... Remember this guy running around in the NO 7 jumper

Couldnt find a pic but have one from when in Melbourne

Darren Obrien WPFC. :)

Originally from Collie, O'Brien began his playing career with West Perth in the WAFL. He played 44 senior WAFL games from 1994 to 1995 for a return of 27 goals and, after winning a WAFL Grand Final with West Perth in 1995, he became the subject of interest from AFL clubs, despite being 26 years old.[3] Known as centreman with a penetrating left foot kick, O'Brien was drafted by Melbourne with the 60th selection in the 1995 National Draft, in what was described as the "surprise of the draft because of his age" by The Age.[3] The Demons' football manager, Richard Griffiths, said the club was "very pleased with ... the experience of O'Brien"[3] and Rohan Connolly wrote that he was "rated highly by good judges" and "possibly ready-made [for AFL]".[4] After being selected, O'Brien agreed to move to Melbourne from his native Perth.

Played in 1995 GF V Subiaco WP PREMIERS

Some good players in both sides. Notice Bill Monaghan played for Subi that day

Hey BH whats you source for jumper numbers or do you just go through old budgets because no real record I can find that lists players numbers. Even the WAFL site in stats on Grandfinals etc seems to have the numbers (and stats) missing on most

when you say primary school in the 80's BH, I hope you don't mean late eighties after the Eagles entered the VFL?......because that's when the WAFL died mate.......if it was early 80's BH, I hope you didn't do a "Manchester United" and simply jump on the SD bandwagon because you were young, impressionable and SD were unbeatable back then :P

no disrespect to other opposition "7's" but Bomber Peake should win this hands down....but I know Doggie hates anything Blue n White, so I don't fancy Bombers chances TBH ;)

Hmmm appreciate your input mate but to say you remember every player and his number from all WAFL teams from over a few seasons is pretty incredible.. You must have a photographic memory..

Bazza seems to think the topic had fallen over (as most good ones do on OZFOOTY) So I nominate you as the selector of best number in the series...
Hard call really as they were all great footballers so How do you pick?
Me I am biased but what WAFL supporter isnt.

Good topic so lets keep it going for awhile. and brings back lots of memories Lest We forget the greats of our game..

Have my no 8 picked already... LOL But will await the signal to move on.

Freeze I was born with black & white blood coursing through my veins ..born at Swan Districts Hospital, both parents and their respective families are all SD supporters grew up in the Swans area (though somehow zoned to Perth  ) and a family member was playing at Swans in the late 70s & 80s meant I never had a choice and the fact we were a very dominant side at the time didn't hurt either! :cheer: ...so in summary no "Manchester United" with this little black duck my friend!!

Ps- primary school was the best 10 years of my life in the 80s!! :silly:

Must be time to move onto NO 8. RAY SCOTT is my nomination from WPFC and his Umpiring career

No finer full forward has lined up in the red and blue of West Perth than Ray Scott, who topped the Cardinals’ goal kicking list on eight consecutive occasions from 1948. A strong marking player of remarkable consistency and reliability, had his career not coincided to a considerable extent with that of South Fremantle’s legendary sharp shooter Bernie Naylor, his reputation would almost certainly have been even weightier.

Ray Scott booted a total of 910 goals for West Perth during a 197 game league career that saw him defy the challenge of Naylor to top the WAFL goal kicking list in 1951 with 141 goals. Four years later, after Naylor had departed the scene, he did so again with 83 goals. His best single season though was 1953 when he managed 143 goals, 24 shy of Naylor’s all time record tally of 167. Scott ‘topped the ton’ on four occasions, and invariably kicked at least twice as many goals as behinds. In one game against Perth in 1953 he booted a club record 15 goals.

After his retirement as a player, Ray Scott coached briefly in Wagga Wagga before embarking on an illustrious 141 game umpiring career which included three WANFL grand finals.

When the Falcons announced their official ‘Team of the Century’ in October 2000, Ray Scott was, one presumes, an almost automatic inclusion.

No mate it is the best player people consider under each Player number in WAFL.
Not necessarily a player you have seen. It is a good topic as it brings back a lot of memories and the number players wore.
I do remember whey Ray Scott umpired and it was quiet amusing to hear the comments from the WP Supporters an supporters from other teams when he did a WP game. It was usually very light banter and not over the top. He obviously took it that way as he was around for a long time. Ha the days of one umpire. Incredible when you look at it now.

The biggest problem I find is finding a list of player numbers. Have googled the death out of it but no real records except for old Budgets and pics where you can see their number.
Spoke to Brian Atkinson a WAFL historian and writer of the History of the WP Football club in ITS A GRAND OLD FLAG. I asked him why he didnt put players jumper numbers in his book and he said it would of been a huge Task a in the old days jumper numbers changed a lot even within clubs and where players left clubs and came back they had to play under a different jumper etc etc etc.

Of course that has changed a bit in modern times where players stick to their jumper up until they retire and it is handed down.

Funny though when I was looking at the pictures from the Reserves v Peel game from last week one of them was wearing NO6 which is worn by Marc Crisp but it wasnt him?

Most probably a short notice thing or something because I am sure Marc is Playing and a bit off retirement. Will have to ask around on that one. e.g

Dean Munns was wearing NO 6 and his number is usually 46... Most probably a problem with the jumpers. Dean is listed as NO 6 on the WAFL site for the game and Crispy didnt play as out with Ankle injury.
Most probably a simple explanation but interesting
