yep agree...the place is third world when you look at what's been done and compare it to other cities. for mine it's not enough to just have new hospitals at FSH, Midland, the kids hospital, airport access at Leach Hwy and city gateway at the causeway, new sports stadium, Elizabeth Quay, reinvigoration of Northbridge precinct, new schools and infrastructure...chit...according to some on here this government has been a abject failure because it hasn't built the Ellenbrook light rail and I couldn't agree more !!!!

BC it's one thing to say we've done this and this and this but at what cost? We're bursting with debt so much so we lost not only our AAA credit rating but it was downgraded further, I think AA+ to AA, thus Barney is desperate to have a big sell off of the states best assets to bail the state out of the mess.

Elizabeth Quay was a rush job and not well thought out as a consequence from a traffic point of view. It's rooted the city mate trust me. Between him and that thing that calls herself the Lord Mayor they have done a great job of choking up the CBD. That Elizabeth Quay will take another decade before its finished which means constant construction equipment and workers around.

At the same time all the work around Wellington Street. Poor planning. Poor prioritisation. Another thing, anyone taken a drive past the new football stadium? Hope you like climbing up and down stairs. The train station has two large flights of stairs either side of it, not an escalator in site. Anyone that goes to AFL matches knows there are a lot of people that are in the large category or elderly or disabled. Looks to me from a distance another disaster looming.

Perth Children's Hospital? How dare you even mention it. Another catastrophe.

I'll give you the heads up on another disaster on the horizon. Brearley Avenue will be closed permanently from January 17. It will be a dogs breakfast getting into and out of the domestic airport from that day on, just after Qantas has announced it will be using the domestic terminal for the new Perth to London service and they are also shifting their Perth to Auckland and Singapore routes under the same terminal. So there will be more traffic going in and out of there.

I've looked into it and it's going to create problems and cause traffic chaos. We can confirm the Lunatics are running the asylum in Western Australia.

I don't disagree with a lot you've said DD as I think we all know it could have been done better...even Colin knows that...but at least it's been done and as the saying goes..you've got to speculate to accumulate. that is borrowing is an integral part of building government infrastructure and I'd rather it now than is say 10 years when the cost would have doubled. much of the problems with projects like the kids hospital has been down to contractors. Christ you've only got to look at Perth Arena which was predominantly built during Labor years and it came in way over budget and very late. 100's of millions $ were paid to BGC in cost over-runs but now we have a world class facility. so you either stay in the dark ages with run down facilities or as a government you get stuck and get the business done...I know which option I prefer. there's a very good article on the new stadium in WA Today which describes in detail what the building is like and for all those knockers who thought it should be located at Kitchener Park, Cockburn, the old power station site and it was too expensive...it's a case of the government saying I told you so...as from what the journo is saying its going to be very good.

With regard to the new stadium it looks magnificent but getting in and out of the stadium and to and from the stadium is the big test. No doubt there will be teething problems in the beginning.

Yep true , that is largely it, tbh more has been achieved in 8 years than in the previous 20 as far as the city goes, the change has been massive, just look at the umm and ahhing over the stadium that's gone on for 20 or 30 years of dithering , I dont reckon labour would of ever built one and if it had it would of been another half arse effort in subi.. E Q will be a massive benefit to the City long term - the Ellenbrook railway pfft, PTA where quite clear the figures just don't warrant it, and we get something far more useful a link to the airport which everyone in the state can benefit from.

BC, don't forget , City Link, a new Underground Bus station, up and running for months now, trouble free, not in the news much because its been a success I guess! usual Perth negativity at play in a lot of these issues.

Perth Children's is a great achievement, yes its had contractor issues but to say its a failure is just half-witted.

The Stadium will be the best in Australia, the location was always the optimum location presentation and open space wise, all those other locations were crap. As for the rail link , the station can handle 30,000 passengers within an hour, and disabled movement has been fully factored in with lifts. not to mention the disabled , car, bus and taxi facilities closer to the ground.

all good points Bazza. As I said to DD earlier I agree completely some of this stuff could have been handled more efficiently but when a government is juggling multiple projects worth billions across a number of areas then mistakes will be made. not making excuses but highlighting the obvious and imo a lot of what we're seeing today wouldn't have got off the ground if it was up to Labor. Alannah McTiernan was a great Transport and Infrastructure Minister for Labor but don't see anyone on the opposition benches these days who could hold a candle to her...and neither would I for that matter as you'd get blown up given her liking for the odd drinkie. ;-) so in some respects Barnett's mob hasn't done a bad job considering. in saying that, which ever side wins the next election the primary focus should now be on paying down debt.

Yep spot on, the commodities price collapse hasn't helped , Royalties took a major hit and compounding that has been the collapse in Stamp Duty with property slumping.

Norway had a huge mining boost as well, funnily enough the govt, of the day slugged the mining companies and stood up to em, the govt here bowed , and Norway spent some and put some away for a rainy day and PLANNED, what did we do? Its terrible for such a windfall and now be in debt. But hey up the qualifying age for the seniors card, that will save us all eh.

Bazza where does one start?

Good to see you apologising for the incompetence of Emperor Barnett's government.

Let's start at the new stadium. When Langoulant, by no means a stooge of the ALP, did the initial investigation the report indicated that the footings for a stadium at its current location was going to cost an additional $200 million. One could reasonably expect that the cost in today's terms would be north of $300 million.

Now Betty's Jetty:an outstanding success if your aim wasto make kids sick with the water feature.

The new children's hospital I am by no means a monarchist nut why would Emperor Barnett want to trash the worldwide reputation of PMH? Perhaps you can also explain how lead in the water supply,as reported in the press, is an advantage.

Ellenbrook rail link WAS PROMISED TWICE by Emperor Barnett and a rapid bus transit system. How many seats around Ellenbrook do you reckon Emperor Barnett's party will get in the election next March Bazza?

The Perth airport rail link: probably the least required rail link required to cater for Perth's growing population. One can speculate as to why it extends to Forrestfield. Similarly, how close will the stations be to the proposed new terminal at Perth Airport Also, please explain how someone living in Fremantle is going to be able to get to the airport BY TRAIN, for a 6.00 am flight?

How does a government lose its triple A credit ranking during a mining boom?

I could go on and on providing further evidence of the incompetence of the Emperor Barnett's government

The ONLY CHANCE Perth has of getting a decent rail network to cater for the projectedincrease in Perth's population is for us to elect an ALP government next March.
