In all honesty are SD and EF technically fighting for 7/8th spots, especially with Cl ramping up the wins.....I know both clubs can still push for finals but I really thought SD would win this game easily considering EF losing Hampson up front and Stephen up back.....how did the debutants go for both teams?
Hard to say at the moment who is in the running for finals because a couple of wins in a row could put a team up to 2nd whereas consecutive losses could see you 8th as the Sharks have found out.
I think this is going to be a fascinating 2nd half of the season where wins against Subiaco will be just about worth 8 points as they are so obviously the unbackable premiership favorites and there will be crucial games every week between the 7 other aspirants. Also Perth could throw a spanner in the works of teams fighting for top 5 positions, so everyone needs to be careful when playing them ( starting with Swans this week
)
Today was a gusty win by the boys, they were motivated and hard at it all day and their tackling was fantastic. They just spoiled their endeavors a bit by poor kicking particularly in the 3rd when they just bombed the ball up forward and made it easy for the EF defenders to repel. Luckily they were a lot more precise in the last quarter and Jukes was a real game breaker up forward, he was often able to create goals from nothing for himself or others, great game by him against his old team.
Faulkner, Elari and Riggio were prolific as usual and it was a good battle in the midfield against Mcnamara, Mcgough, Anthony and ROB. Each team had momentum at different times of the match and it was quite an interesting game to watch.
Davis lifted in the 2nd half and showed real leadership. Notte was his usual solid self in his 150th and it was fantastic that the boys were able to get over the line for him. Banfield is still getting into form but he is very handy running around in the forward line as he chased and hassled and scored a couple of opportune goals. Matty Rogers contributed all day.
I thought Nathan Blakely did a heap around the ground and was the most effective big man on either team, even though Young did kick 3 goals when he was resting forward. I really like Blakelys 2nd and 3rd efforts when the ball is on the ground. Houghton really played well and his goal on the run was one of the highlights of the day. The defence worked well as a unit although Ames made a few uncharacteristic blunders with his kicking which surprised me. Our debutant Alby Dean looked OK but obviously will need a few games to get used to the step up in pace from the ressies.
Overall I went home very happy with the guys efforts and to make it better the reserves won comfortably with Dylan Nelson kicking 8 and Rudy 3. They and others would be pushing for selection this week so we are in a good spot at the moment.
