The loss of Maurice out of the guts was a huge hole to replace as was the enforcer Basil and Joe McKay at both ends of the ground.
Did the likes of Daryl Vernon and Stephen Mount come over from Richmond as some sort of exchange for the great Maurice?

That's correct mate - Mount was pencilled in to replace Joey McKay , but early on it became clear he could also go forward and kick a heap of goals.
eventually Bruce Monteath also returned

Here is a question: If you linned up SD's 81 side against Cl's, which would be the better side?

AR as a generalisation I would think that Claremont have generally was a team of champions and we were a champion team.

Swan 42: -- thanks -- I had a look at the two sides whom played against each other in the second semi final. SD lost by four goals in a low scorring game for the era.

One thing I did notice was the players unlisted for SD, includding:

Mike Richardson
Tony Solin
Don Holmes

Don't know about Holmes some type of injury
Richardson got in a pub brawl at the Dianella Hotel over a game of pool and broke his left arm. From memory Solin was with him there. And must of also got hurt.

3 extremely costly injuries at the wrong time of the year AR....in Richo's case totally unrelated to the football field!

Yes AR from memory Willo was injured in the second half of 1981 who would have been handy with both Richardson and Holmes missing as a goal kicking small forward.
The reason I have always said our 81 side was our best on paper is we lost the likes of Simon Beasley, Craig Holden, Ian Williams to the vfl, Daryl Sutton back to the vfl plus experienced veterans Steve Gillespie & Gary McDonald retired at seasons end.
Luckily we had great young talent in Shine, Sartori, Rance, Hutton, Baker, Langsford, Fogarty, Holmes etc ready to step up into the void.

BH was just reading about Ian Williams on Wikipedia.Spoke to Ian about footy plenty of times back in the 1990's.But never knew what I just read.Footsgray signed Williams prior to the 1982 season.Footsgray paid SD an undisclosed fee for his transfer.Ian decided not to go to Melbourne and went to work ,live and play footy in Port Hedland. The Wafl stopped him from playing up there. He played over 50 games for Footsgray 1983-85 and kicked over 70 goals. Struggled with his knee problem in 85 and returned back to Wa.
