I take your point that a lot of horses race every year, so the chances of a horse dying while racing or being euthanised is very slight.
That said, if even one-tenth of that number of players died on the footy field in a given year there would be a major outcry.
I'm certainly not advocating that racing on the flat should be banned, but agree with your suggestion that racing clubs should work in conjunction with the RSPCA to minimise the chance of equine fatalities.
For example, the above link says that 46 of the horses that died were two-year-olds, so perhaps horses shouldn't race until they're at least three (the Golden Slipper people wouldn't like that idea).
There's some parallels there with the AFL in 2009 increasing the draft age to 18 (obviously for different reasons to any proposed lift in horses' minimum racing age).

Specifically I said that the RSPCA should work with the racing clubs.

Point taken, Swan42.
I don't think the clubs can simply brush this aside and just say "that's racing".
Likewise, the RSPCA will need to concede some ground (or furlongs).

adgm I wasn't having a go at you rather I was emphasising that it is extremely unlikely that horse racing will be banned so instead of, in my opinion grandstanding, the RSPCA should be working in concert with the racing clubs. As I mentioned there have been significant changes to improve safety for horses and riders.

As an example of the welfare of the horses is paramount, horses that bleed are given 3 months and a second occurrence the horse is banned from racing for life. In America I believe they are able to be given medication and allowed to race. Also, horses cannot receive treatment on raceday.

No problems at all, Swan42, I wasn't suggesting that you were having a go at me.
I agree with you that there are things that can be done to improve horses' welfare while at the same time ensuring that the racing industry can still flourish.
I'm both a bloke who likes a punt (though the punt doesn't like me) and also likes horses for the magnificent creatures they are, similar to many posters on this forum.

There will be no Melbourne Cup or any horse racing by 2030 . The SJW's have it in their sights and it has no chance.
Victorians still laugh at West Aussies because of the way we bailed out the vfl and then allowed it to be called it the AFL!

In the year 2230 there may be nothing, let alone the MC, unless we do something about global warming/climate change.

What is the significance of 212 years from now may I ask?

Yes it could have been a typo Mike.

FWIW there is absolutely not a snowflakes chance in hell there will be no horse racing industry by 2030 as the industry as a whole is one of the biggest employers in the country not too mention the amount Govt make by way of taxes from the industry!

If TFAF was talking about the next SD premiership coming in 2230 that unfortunately would be more realistic!! :(

"Well, I came down there with my hat caved in
Oh I'll go back home with my pocket full of tin oh doo-dah day
Goin' to run all night, goin' to run all day
I'll bet my money on the bobtail nag, somebody bet on the bay.
Well, the Camptown ladies sing this song doodah doodah
Ah theā€¦"
