I come back to my previous point Why would the Indians bother with dodgy stuff like ball tampering/doctoring wickets when they know they could bowl us out with a beach ball 9 times out of 10 in India?
Quick wickets required today by Australia or else it could be a long day in the field. India will only want to bat once in the match.

I'm not sure why everyone doesn't just spray their pants with Mr Sheen before they go onto the ground. Clean dust and polish I say, and if the bowlers get an advantage good luck to them. It might make the batters work a bit harder at their game.

Worked well when I used to play and very hard to identify. Using this trick I have seen balls at the 50 over mark that have 1 side as shiny and new as it was during the first over.

Give the bowlers some sort of chance I say - it's a batter's game and we now rave at how good batters are around the world.

I doubt anyone in the modern game would have averaged over 40 against the windies of the 80's. Let's not forget the toured Australia i think 7 or 8 summers in a row when at the peak of their powers. Just shows how good players like AB really were.

PH I agree 100% regarding AB and a lot of his team mates at the time.
They had to face up to the WI pace bowling entourage of Marshall, Garner, Holding, Roberts, Croft, Clarke, Daniels and later Walsh, Ambrose, Patterson, Bishop, Benjamin, Davis etc seemingly every second summer from the late 70s through to the mid 90s and in the off summers it was either England (Willis, Botham, Dilley, Malcolm et al) or Pakistan (Imran Khan, Sarfraz Nawaz, Abdul Qadir, Wasim Akram, Waqar Younis etc) or India (Kapil Dev plus an army of quality spin bowlers) or NZ (Hadlee, Morrison, Cairns etc) and finally SA came back in to the fold with a array of top quality fast bowlers (Donald, McMillan, DeVilliers etc) both home and away.
As good as the likes of Smith & Labuschagne are and Warner has been im not sure they have had that sort of quality bowling to face up to seemingly Test after Test!

some quality names on your list BH, making runs was harder then, and little protective gear to wear as a batter.

Would like to see guys rock onto the front foot and hit through the line against some of the bowlers you mentioned. The next few deliveries would be interesting to watch that's for sure.

Good posts all. We have ,never been able to play the moving ball, fast or slow, in Australia or away since 1956 -- Laker. Before that date, Bradman and the others played 'timeless matches'. Literally, they had to value their wickets, had patience and good technics.

G.S. Chappell is our best batsman post-war. He played against the WI and much stronger MCC sides.  Ponting lost the Ashes once he had some reasonable opposition.

The best way to stop some of the shots they play is to ban the top six from using the helmet. Further, if you are hit in the  head by a bowler in the top six you should be made to 'retire, perhaps re-appearring at number eleven. Batsmen need to be reminded that being hit in the head is bad batsmenship, and, in addition, to respect bowlers and helmets., Did anyone hit Hughes?

All good points you make there, ArkRoyal.
In the days of "timeless Tests" (indeed, some Sheffield Shield matches were "timeless"), overrates were a lot quicker and batsmen could afford to be more patient.
There hasn't been much joy in the current Test for an Aussie supporter, but Todd Murphy's debut has easily been the highlight.
With all 3 wickets to fall so far, we're almost seeing a carbon copy of Jason Krejza's debut (8-215 and 4-143) at Nagpur in late 2008.
Hopefully, Murphy takes as many wickets as Krejza, concedes a lot fewer runs, and has a longer Test career (Krejza's 2nd and last Test came the following month, against the Saffers at the WACA).

So far so good for Murphy,3/32..
He was spotted by a Country Cricket Coach,6 years ago.
It was the first time he had ever had a Cricket ball in his hand..
Late starter and amazing rise in 6 years.Great selection at this point.
Boland's bowling well also.Lyon and the Woakster are useless atm.

backs to the wall after Day 1 of the series

Murphy continues to impress and has been the sole ray of light in a pretty dire match for Australia so far. Even though Cummins and Lyon have not performed well this comes back to the inadequate first innings score which puts too much pressure on the bowlers to make things happen.
Wow just heard Murphy got Kohli first ball after lunch, this is getting better and better.
