I am sure our historian will step in if my research is astray.

The last of those matches was hardly a fair fight with 9 against 2.

Good grief!
What were people doing in the olden days? Obviously not attending football matches?
Makes one wonder why play a game when no-one is there with an attendance of 0?

It was 1944 - World War fucking 2 where most of SF were out preventing the Nazis & Japs from killing any more innocent people
That year was an underage comp which is only recognised out of respect for the servicemen who eventually lost their lives so we could live
Those results mean nothing other than tribute to the diggers fighting overseas

If I remember correctly one year Swans may not have fielded a team and the winner of the Sandover Medal in that year played for West Perth.

As for his remark, of course we would be able to stay with a bottom side in the AFL on a dry ground for half a game -- that has always been the case. Some people on here have always over-rated the strength of the VFL, particularly its bottom half, which does not say much for their competition, as even the bottom clubs are supposed to have some of the best players in the country through the draft system WP and South both have good side wait an see what happens.

Swan 42: you are correct about SD being unable to filed a team during the war.

Yep, that was Laurie Bowen.

I went to school with his son, Paul, who ended up as General Manager of Channel 9 Perth for many years.

Paul was a bloody good under-age footballer, and from memory, played state schoolboys. He went to Swans as a senior, but never quite made the grade as a WAFL regular.
