Being a bit provocative here but just testing peoples opinions. The WA v SA interstate clash in Adelaide this week starts at 11.40 am on Saturday. I assume it will be a curtain raiser for the showdown later in the day. So the game will be over by 2.15 pm Perth time. My question is why couldn't we have a round of WAFL fixtures this weekend? Maybe a couple of games on Saturday and one or two on Sunday. Yes many of the star players would be missing but it would create some interest as it would test the depth of some of the better teams and give some ressies players an opportunity and also give the lesser teams in the competition a chance to upset the slightly weakened top dogs like Subiaco and SF. Those of us who remember footy in the 60's and 70's would recall that this was the norm for the WAFL when the state teams were away playing in the Eastern States and it threw up some interesting results at times.

Totally agree, Mike.

With apologies to Sir Henry Newbolt:

Play on, Play on, and play the game!

And which club do you suggest should play Subiaco on that day?

Perhaps Subiaco could lobby for the bye that round and have an intra club match to test themselves.

We have never played on the State Game week from my memory, maybe when it was played mid week.

Not true. I refer you to the year Ralph and Beasley shared the leading goalkicking for the year with totals of 82 and 87 goals if I remember the totals correctly.

Yep can remember in the late 70s early 80s a few State games vs SA & Vic on over East and the WAFL still played on the same Saturday. A few players might have got their League debut when the State players were Interstate.

I suppose I'm coming from the point of view that while 22 of the states best run around Adelaide Oval this weekend there will be 500 league, reserves and colts players in Perth twiddling their thumbs in the middle of the footy season. Wouldn't be a major issue if there were no club byes but Perth and Swans are in the situation that they don't have a game for 3 weeks as they have byes at either end of the state match. Not great if you are trying to develop some interest amongst supporters
I don't think it would hurt to have a round of fixtures this weekend and surely the attendances could get any lower than they have been so far this year.

Bye weekend is best for all Clubs, it would prove to be an ufair advantage for some clu bs if they had to play whilst there state reps are away. Gives clubs a chance to have Friday or Saturday night function with out the stress of a game too
