Where did Swans suddenly get all the money from? Apparently they only use local talent for their team according to our Bogundean friends coz they have no money.

The article goes on to say that swans are second only to Subi as far as spending on their football department goes for the last 2 years. They apparently spent over $1 mill on that department in each of 2011, 2012 & 2013 then cut it to $859k in '14 but upped it again in '15 to $912k, so is this a reflection of a struggling club that a year or two ago couldn't pay it's bills or tax responsibilities? Based on the last 2 years on field performances that indicates they have a highly inefficient footy department that's leaking money.

Also seems there's been a falling out between Swans & Crowley, seems Crowley will keep his $19k sign on fee whether he goes to Swans or not, with Bottrel only commenting that they expect that fee back, not that his contract demands it's return. Another piece of poor management by the sound of it.

On a really positive note for the Ducks, Bottrell is confident that veterans Ames & Simpson will play on next year.

The total spend on the football department might just be an indicator of the actual cost of caring and nurturing local talent which is something our club have been reasonably successful at in recent seasons. Depends on your definition of inefficient when considering your argument SS. Whilst our senior team for a variety of reasons has had a disastrous season this year our clubs colts record over recent seasons has been nothing short of excellent. One would hope this will pay off over the next few years. As for Mzungu I hope this is just some lazy journalism from the JT and that the player would head back to Perth. If a coaching apprentice type role then maybe some value in it but if just a player role then we should look at recruiting 2 - 3 midfielders at same cost IMO.

I thought John Townsend was actually doing Perth a favour in that article. He was obviously tipped off that Swans were preparing to make a play for Mzungu and pointed out the rules regarding approaching AFL listed players of other WAFL clubs and the penalties for breaching them and in highlighting SD football Dept spend while they have been carrying massive debt.

I thought it was good investigative journalism. Isn't that what we want and expect from journos?

Where does one start? The track record for Western Australian Sports' journalists getting stories correct is a very poor one including, in your opinion, the esteemed John Townsend. On what basis do you conclude that there has been a falling out between Swans and Crowley? He has been linked to going to Subiaco; linked by whom? Some Subiaco posters on this site, perhaps.

How does Townsend know what Swans have spent on the footy department in the past two seasons (2015 & 2016)? Similarly, how does he know what the rest of the WAFL clubs have spent on their respective footy departments?

On what basis can he state that Swans are and I quote "after becoming convinced that Ryan Crowley would not return to the club"?

If one believed his article one would have to come to the conclusion that Swans' salary cap must be significantly lower than other WAFL clubs as we apparently wouldn't be able to afford Mzungu as well as David Ellard, Clancee Pearce, Jamie Bennell. Good thing we don't have Twomey and/or Robinson in the mix.

To mikeh's point of under the points cap, we could have both Crowley and Mzungu in our points cap and have many, many more to play with.

Yes Swan of course how silly of me not to recognize that any piece of journalism that in anyway could be construed as critical of your prescious SDFC is just inaccurate rubbish on the otherhand any piece of journalism about any other club particularly Subi should be given great consideration.

................... sorry had to pause while I stopped laughing.

Don't you think that if anything quoted in the article was inaccurate that the SDFC would be right onto it and demand a retraction? If they dont do so then it is obviously accurate.

journos like Townsend have sources...sometimes they're on the money...sometimes they're not due to changing circumstances...but that's journalism for you. I was at dinner last night with a good friend of Crowley's girlfriend and she thinks they'll stay in Victoria but at day's end..who knows?

On the money when reporting on SD or Perth FC, not on the money when reporting on Subiaco FC. How was Maccas last night?

No Journalist since the beginning of the press has ever given a rock solid guarantee of accuracy, no matter what the topic, I constantly came across stories that were littered with inaccuracies particularly with crime reporting, all the info is based on sources, even when you gave info it was amazing how they would stuff up the info and write something wrong, none of them are 100% reliable 100% of the time and of course some situations are dynamic in that they are constantly changing. The news is just that a journal of events according to the best info they can get and how well it will drag the reader in and flog a paper, its a business of selling news.

I always remember that rubbish story Liam Bartlett ran in the Sunday Times about the SAS, he seems to have survived that is still around running stories.
