Managed to get to 3 of the 4 games on the weekend, some good and some not so good footy on display.

East Fremantle v Claremont

The one I didn't get to see, but seems like it went to script, with Claremont back to full strength were always going to be to strong for the Sharks.

Perth v South Fremantle

Perth have announced that they are a legitimate threat this season. A high quality 1st and 4th quarters, a scrambly and error filled 2nd and 3rd quarters. Perth could have put it beyond doubt if not for some poor kicking in the 3rd quarter.

Demons have a good spread of talent, without relying on a few individuals, while for South a case of too few doing too little, or for not long enough.

East Perth v West Perth

East Perth back on the winners list, however kicking in front of goal was poor again, which cost them severely against Peel the week before. I think I may have rated East Perth a bit too highly prior to the season, a completely different team when Powell-Pepper is in the side. Not sure if they have enough depth to cover when the big guns are missing.
As for West Perth, Baker is a goer, couple of others have a crack, but more about development than winning games this season.

Swans v Subi

Very complete looking side are Swans. Very assured down back, pace through the middle and multiple options up forward. As much as I overrated East Perth, I think i've underrated Swans.

Subi would relish the bye this week, a chance to regroup, take a breath, and re-set some goals for the rest of the season.

Re-assessment time - Claremont, Swans, Perth sit in the top bracket, South a bit behind, East Perth and East Fremantle to fight out for 5th spot, Peel a bit in no man's land, West Perth to cause little more than nuisance value, and Subi a long way away.

Thanks for the review GC. Makes interesting reading.

I watched a bit of the PTH v SF game and on the money with your assessment. Pth much too good on the day for the SF lads. Pth clearance domination was huge and their hunting to win contested football was exceptional. Tackling pressure was terric all day, didnt allow any of the SF boys to get off the leash.
SF in my opinion struggled to come up after the bye imo can be a positive or negative for kids. I wouldnt write SF off yet as apart from this week they have been fairly consistent over the four games and have beaten SD at Basso. This week V EF will be the test for their mental toughness to see how the react to the loss.

Spot on GC. P had I think 5 straight shots on goal in that third quarter, most without a lot of pressure and some from set shots, which they missed which would have sown it up.

I was surprised at how poor Souths were by foot on Saturday. Really butchered the ball particularly going forward to the man mountain Dzelebdzic. Scoreboard in the end probably didn't reflect how close the contest was for 90% of the game.

GC.....besides the obvious selections in Petrevski-Seton, Goddard,Hura, Waterman, Powell-Pepper and Strnadica.....who is a likely U/18 state squad player this year....apparently WA have a pretty good chance from all reports.

Think the obvious ones would be the 2 playing league - Fisher at Perth and Thorne at Peel, as well as Wright from East Perth, Baker from West Perth. other than that who knows what the selectors would be thinking, although would be a real shame if Narkle from Perth didn't get an opportunity, has been absolutely brilliant every time i've seen him. Bereyne's kicked a lot of goals, but he's carrying way too much weight.

GC do you know what the go is re the late 1997 born players eligibility for the State 18s? I know in the past those boys from remote areas like Charlie Cameron & Francis Watson were eligible is that still the case or is strictly for players born in 1998 and beyond?
Guelfi from C is one who comes to mind who would be handy for WA.

From memory, without checking, the 18s are allowed 6 19 year-olds on their list of 40 but only allowed to play 3 in the same game.

English from Souths would be one of them.
