G'day. Ive had a look through the fixtures for 2014 and discovered the following issues. I'll go through it club by club:
C: Play EP in rounds 8 & 13, while they also have a 19 week break agains Perth (1 & 20), and a 14 week gap between games against EF (4 & 18)
EF: 2 games against SF in 4 weeks (6 & 10), with a 14 week gap between games against SD (8 & 22)
EP: 2 games against P 5 weeks apart (6 & 11), and 2 games against WP in 6 weeks (4 & 10). Also have 3 byes in 8 weeks (9,14 & 17)
PT: Perth twice in 6 weeks (7 & 13)
P: S three times in 9 weeks (8,12 & 17), SD twice in 5 weeks (5 & 10), and a 20 week gap between games against WP (3 & 23).
SF: play S in round 1, then wait until round 18, followed by another game 4 weeks later in round 22. Also have 3 byes in 9 weeks (8,11 & 17)
S: play SD twice in 4 weeks (7 & 11)
SD: play WP twice in 4 weeks (15 & 19)
WP: 3 byes in 10 weeks (7,13 & 17)

I've also started looking at all other fixtures dating back to 1997 when the 9 team competition began. I hope to have that completed in a fortnight.
And in case youre wondering, yes I do have way too much time on my hands at the moment.

Why are they issues? The easy way to fixture is like the WAAFL and go home away and in the same order x 2 rounds but as we know not possible as all clubs want certain fixtures to suit needs for sponsors, revenue and to accommodate other stuff like foxtel cup.

Probably better things you could be using your spare time for. Perhaps head to to Basso and give rooms a paint or something else worthwhile for club or community.

PO Hawk, I appreciated his input
Victorians still laugh at West Aussies because of the way we bailed out the vfl and then allowed it to be called it the AFL!

G'day again. The idea behind this exercise was to point out some of the decisions regarding the fixturing. It seems ridiculous to have two teams playing each other 3 times in the space of 9 weeks. One way around it would be to have it drawn up that if you play a team in the first 5 rounds, they are the teams you play three times, while the remaining teams are played twice. In a 23 round season, clubs would play each other three times this way
in round 1,10,19
round 2,11,20
round 3,12,21
round 4,13,22
round 5,14,23
Its always puzzled me how the roster for the byes isnt drawn up first, with the fixtures created around it. The clubs involved in the Foxtel Cup would have their byes allocated first, with the other 7 clubs having their byes allocated around it.
Its just something to get people talking. I'm not trying to point out its rigged in any way, I just think it could be done better. I havent figured out how yet, but its something to consider to see some fixtures drawn up that remove some the scenarios that happen every year.
