Heard the news of the passing of austin robertson junior at the age of eighty. Was truly a champion and not a word thrown around lightly unlike today.I remember going to watch the mighty royals in the sixties and seeing the battle between him and Noddy Mcaulley another champion.

I was just a bit too young to remember Robertson as a player
but an old league footballer told me once years later that you could beat Subiaco but you just couldn't beat Austin Robertson
not only could he time his leads to perfection - he was robotic as a goalkicker no matter where he was on the ground
coming from a club that had Bernie Naylor I rank him right there
after footy he managed some massive sport stars

Yes, I just heard the news and it's sad to hear he has passed away. Ocker was my boyhood hero and I wore number 16 all through my footy days both juniors and seniors in deference to the great man.

I was a teenager in 1973 and after the final siren in the GF, I ran onto the ground and gave Ocker a huge maroon and gold flag my mother made for me.  He carried it when the players did a lap of honour and I found it later outside the players change rooms.  I also remember when he kicked 15 on Trevor Sprigg to bring up 157 goals in a season and break Naylor's record.  Good memories indeed.

His skill as a full forward was unsurpassed remembering of course, all the records he set were during a time when Subi was a basket case. My daughter bought me his book a few years ago for Father's Day and after she rang the club to get his contact details, he met with her and signed it in person.

He also had an interesting life starting off as a journo I think before going on to be instrumental during the Packer cricket era before being Paul Hogan's media man and making a fortune off Crocodile Dundee movies but unfortunately lost the lot.

His former wife was a Miss West Coast and my English teacher at South Freo High. The term champion gets bandied about too much for my liking but in Ocker's case, it truly fits the bill. I don't think we'll ever see another full forward like him.

RIP Ocker.

Players of Robertson's ilk are generational indeed. Never saw the great man play, but have read enough to understand what a legend he was, not only for Subi, the WAFL but the sport in general.

Doig, Naylor and Roberston were well n truly right up there with the likes of Coleman, Coventry, Hudson, Lockett, Ablett Snr and Dunstall from over east.

Everyone loves a goalkicking machine, regardless of what club they play for. Condolences to the Robertson and SFC family.

I was lucky enough to see Ocker play many times when I was a teenager and what got me about him as a player was his total efficiency of movement. His timing of leads, ease of kicking, speed across the ground and sureness in everything he did was remarkable.I think it’s fair to say he wasn’t a high flyer marking wise but he didn’t have to - he basically glided everywhere. As many of you have said - a true champion.Vale Ocker.

Sad day for the Subiaco football family with the loss of one of their greatest ever players. He played in the days of the traditional full forward when players played in positions and it was more 1 on 1. He played in an era of great full backs as well, one of the few that could stay with him was the great Brian France an sometimes Noddy Macauley.

If all his state game goals and those scored with South Melbourne are included, he sits at 5th over all in the company of Hudson, Lockett, Dunstall etc. He holds the home and away goal kicking record at 157, just pipping the great Bernie Naylor who Ocker often says was a great influence and mentor.

As BC said he played in a pretty average team apart from '73 when he was at the end of his career, but had some quality players who new how to hit up his marvelous leading with deadly passes, the likes of Reggie Hampson, Cam Blakemore, Wally Martin, Tommy Robbins and of course Bunts who was instrumental in that last game of the season v EF when he kicked 15.7 to beat Naylors record.

It was an honour to have had the privilege to watch most of his career and to meet the man personally who was always generous with his time.

RIP Ocker.

Don't forget Moloney and Tyson lads. According to the books, for example, George never missed a set shot for WA in a state game. In addition, he was the second player to kick a century in Victoria. AR also played in Melbourne, 1967, which was the year Subi finished last during his career. RIP mate.

Quite shocked by this news, he was writing his column write up until last week in Westen Post, which I used to read most weekends, tended not to agree with him on a lot of things he had a different outlook, but this must have been sudden.

I wrote to him last year and told him I enjoyed his pieces in the subi post. He replied and reminded me of a picture on the front pages of the budget of my father carrying him off the ground.

Sad news as he was also my childhood hero, only got to see the last part of his career including the well deserved 1973 premiership. Had a fantastic career and is truly a legend of the Subi footy club and WA football.
RIP Ocker
