Exactly, that’s what I was pointing at in my previous post. I’m afraid that forums like Perthnow are really just gossip rags. That’s why I google around for more reliable news sources.
I believe nine news .com are fairly good.

1990 I started following them properly. Had been a supporter of Sydney to that point but not really a massive supporter. Followed the results was probably closer to how it was and happy if Sydney won and couldn't have given a shit about who won the VFL. WAFL was what I was more interested in but given AFL was becoming more and more in Perth I got on board.

Who still follows the VFL team they followed as a kid in WA? I followed North Melbourne because of Cable and I absolutely loved that team in the 70's so many great footballers and cult figures like Crackers Keenan and the galloping gasometer Mick Nolan.

WA was like a shop for wealthy Victorian clubs back then, NM also had Ross Glendenning, Graham Melrose and Kevin Bryant in that era then later from 82 onwards the Krakouers.

That obviously led to the formation of the West Coast Eagles and yes I jumped on board and lost interest in North, even when they came good in the Pagan/Cary era I'd completely divorced myself from North Melbourne.

Always supported Footscray, regardless of WCE or Freo. My old man and older brother were Fitzroy fans, I thought they said Footscray, so started going for them in the early 70s....Templeton, Quinlan, Dempsey, Sandilands etc...then Beasley, Hardie, Sewell, Budgie etc followed by Wynd, Grant,Johnson, West, Akermanis etc....

What about the great Dougie Hawkins? Or little libba. 1985 was a memorable year with a preliminary final appearance under Michael Malthouse with side with more than a few West Aussies - those already mentioned and shortie Daniels from Claremont and Andrew Purser from the Old East's. Les Bamblett was a favourite of mine around that time along with Jim Edmond. Plenty of other top players like McGuiness, Wallis, Kennedy and MacLean to name just a few. The 90s certainly would have its up and downs for the sons of the west which the the doco the "Year of the Dog" provides some insight.

+ other West Aussies- Ian Williams, Murray Rance, Phil Cronan, Steve Hargrave, Tim Gepp, Bruce Duperouzel & John Georgiades in the 1980s as well.
Tony McGuinness & Brian 'Choco' Royal were pretty handy too and played regular State of Origin for SA & VIC respectively.

A few players from Footscray in the 1970-80s later tried their luck in the WAFL with differing success- Dennis Collins, Phil Bradmore, Wayne Foreman, Brian Perrin, Gordon Polson, Peter Munro, Gordon Casey, Stewart Magee etc.

Stt: not for me, at least; whether they play for the Eagles or Carlton, in my view, they are Subi players whose careers have been ripped off our club.
