There has been a lot of chat on here about the perceived need to get the WAFL up and running again this year, no matter what.

The natural flow-on from that is whether the lesser leagues should also go all out to run their competitions - in whatever form - in 2020.

I have a different view, based on what has traditionally been the norm in WA sport for many, many decades ie the cut-over from winter to summer sports.

While I am not sure how many WAFL players would participate in summer sports these days - there were certainly plenty in previous decades - I am pretty certain there are many, many players in those lower footy leagues who do.

Do those summer sports deserve to be sacrificed so that footy can get a few games in what will basically be an artificial season?

You know the media are really struggling for sport stories when an Amateurs player going over to the USA as a punter at one of their College's is making the news FMD!

It's a great question to pose. My answer would be a definitive "no"

I guess it's where priorities lie for individual players and at day's end think it's up to them to make that choice.

We constantly hear "we're all in this together". The fact that some sports happen to run during summer doesn't excuse them from taking a hit or doing their bit like everything else, they need to also consider shortening their seasons so that everyone is in the same boat making the same sacrifices so we all contribute to getting through this thing.

They already have "taken their hit" Senior - at least the summer sport I know about.

Virtually their entire finals program during March was wiped out.

Do they need to cop it on the new season - I guess that is a matter of individual judgement?

The trajectory at the moment suggests that the traditional summer sports opening at the beginning of October should be OK - albeit perhaps with a shortened pre-season. Although even that may not be required.

Should they reduce their season for what, by all accounts, will be a plastic footy season - if it happens at all?
