I think you will find that colts is classed as the lowest league including 3rds, 4ths or even 5ths.

I know first hand of a club who had 3 colts players play reserves in the finals that werent qualified, they weren't good enough to play league and the 2s side still lost.

On the flipside if you league side is still in the finals your whole league side can play reserves providing its still on the same day. same with reserves and thirds

I believe the mysterious one is correct.

Your highest grade for example is B & B Reserves, then colts, then 3rds/4ths.
Colts can play up in Reserves but not down in thirds even if on the same day (but ressies can play down).

Whitey are you just talking about finals in your scenario?? I know alot of clubs have their colts back up the same day and play thirds just to ensure they can field a side

Grade means Grade.

A - D1 are grades consisting of two teams - League and Reserves.

Colts are a separate Grade (eg Ian Dargie Colts) consisting on one team per Club in one or more Grade of Colts.

E Grades are separate Grades again.

Having gone through the debate this year, I am now much clearer.

Colts who have qualified to play Colts finals can only play in the League or Reserves team of the Clubs highest Grade. If a Club has teams registered (but not necessarily playing finals) in (say) A and D grades, the finals qualified Colt can only be selected to play League or Reserves in A Grade.

SELECTION OF PLAYERS BETWEEN TEAMS WITHIN A CLUB
BY-LAW B2.5
B2.4.1 Where a club’s higher grade team has a fixtured “BYE” or “FORFEIT” and three or more higher grade players are selected to play in a lower grade, no more than two of them are permitted to return to the higher grade after playing one match in the lower grade. The remaining players selected may be promoted after having played at least two matches in the lower grade.
B2.4.2 Lower grade players are permitted to play in a higher grade match on the same weekend or round of fixtures as deemed by the General Manager.
B2.4.3 Higher grade players are not permitted to play in a lower grade match on the same weekend or round of fixtures as deemed by the General Manager.
B2.4.4 A colts player is not permitted to play in more than one colts match on the same weekend or round of fixtures as deemed by the General Manager.
B2.4.5 Where a player has been found to have breached this by-law, his team shall receive the same penalty as playing an ineligible player.

If you go by B2.4.3 then the colts shouldn’t be doubling up in thirds on the same day.....

Colts, being a lower grade, means that B2.4.3 does not apply to Colts 'doubling up' and playing Thirds (or Reserves or League) on the same day.
