Quote from AFL website:

“The AFL’s annual round recognising and celebrating indigenous players and culture is named in honour of Sir Doug Nicholls…”

Noticed the WAAFL has a “Count me in” round coming up next weekend and “Red Arm Band” round in a month or so but they didn’t jump on board last weekend with the AFL to recognise the immense contribution our indigenous brothers and sisters continue to make to our game here in WA?

What do others think of this omission?

BTW my favourite players when I was a young boy were Stephen Michael and Barry Cable.

It was left to the Clubs to decide how much to put into it. I saw a photo from Manning on the weekend and apparently they had jerseys made up, center circle painted, arm bands, Didgeridoo players and a ceremony between the reserves and league games. Well done Manning Rippers.

The AFL already do it so why should ammos? The clubs already struggle financially enough without any more expectations placed upon them. Why should a club with no indigenous players have to make the effort! The WAAFL already focus' on other worthy causes other rounds distinctly different to the AFL so lets just leave it at that.

I see your point Major about some clubs struggling financially but I’m sure the WAAFL could at least recognise our indigenous players and officials without any monetary cost to individual clubs.

As to your point about some clubs having no indigenous players I’d be interested to know how many clubs there were like that and why.

BTW well done Manning Rippers

One reason why the WAAFL should have it is beautifully illustrated here:

Interesting article Androgynous, well worth a read.

Major any update on how many clubs out there that may have no indigenous players and why?

Is there anyone else out there who may know of other clubs without indigenous players and why that's the case?

You are a knobhead drop kick. Why does it matter how many aboriginal players a club has?
And it's simple to work out why anyone plays anywhere:
-they live in the area
-they have mates at that club

Interesting, when you read between the lines.

And not the first time its happened at this club's homeground.

Banga no need for name calling mate.

Did you read the article Androgynous gave a link to? (Bloody brilliant). If you do read it you may come away with the answer to your question “Why does it matter?”

I agree that you’re not going to get a lot of indigenous families that can afford to live in most of the areas covered by clubs in the top couple of grades (with a couple of exceptions) but that goes to a deeper issue which I’m open to discussing with you if you want.

As for having mates at a club? That’s all well and good if you’re already there but are you then implying that a club with no indigenous players can’t be open to welcoming those talented indigenous players who may want to join? Or that the players at those clubs can’t be mates with their indigenous brothers for some reason? Seriously?

Are any of the WAAFL board members indigenous? If there are any, why haven’t they done anything or if not it might be one of the reasons they haven’t yet pushed for an Indigenous round. Just a thought…
