What a good weekend of football it was. Collegians kept their chances of a home final alive with a great win, Kingsway kept the pressure on second spot with a win over Mt Lawley, Wembley have virtually wrapped up top spot (only a complete capitulation would change that) North Freo looking to finish off the season strongly did just that with a good win and as for Wanneroo v Swan Athletic...well it was a great game.

When MrM awoke on the Saturday morning he had a good feeling about the day already. The sun was shining and as MrM was strolling through the Showgrounds car park, it became apparent the ground was looking its best as well so you knew it was going to be a good day. Just as MrM was turning the corner towards the lovely grandstand the siren rang out for the start of the colts game.

Even though Swan Ath only had 18 players, they were taking it right up to Wanneroo and had kicked 2 goals before Wanneroo had started to try and play some good football. Wanneroo then controlled the game from then on in. Started playing some good team football and it resulted in Wanneroo kicking away with a decent score. Some inaccurate kicking cost them as for Swan Athletic, what cost them was only 18 players, but at half time a little scuffle happened and they were reduced to 17 men for the start of the third quarter. Wanneroo were too good though and won by 11 goals.

Wanneroo Reserves were up next though and a poorer first quarter you would not see. Wanneroo trailed 5.1 to 0.0 at quarter time which led MrM to wonder, is this why people drink?! After half time though Wanneroo Reserves actually won the game, kicking 4 goals to Swan Ath’s 3, it was too little too late though, as Wanneroo needed a better start than that to walk away with a win. Swan Ath won by 3 goals.

Wanneroo’s league team needed a win and boy was MrM fired up as Swan Ath needed a win also to keep their faint hopes of a finals berth alive. As is the case for the last 3 meetings between these sides it was a tough affair right from the very start. Wanneroo controlled the play, but just couldn’t make an impact on the scoreboard, but when Swan Ath had a chance, they made the most of it. At quarter time Wanneroo led marginally. Again in the second quarter it was another tough contest, but this time Swan were the ones leading at the major break.

In the third quarter Wanneroo again controlled the play and hit the front once more but with the amount of play they had they should have been able to register more on the scoreboard as we headed into the final change Wanneroo led by 4 points, but with a little rain coming down it was going to be a tight last quarter.

The first contest in the last quarter set the tone as two players ran into the contest the ball collided and hopped straight back up ( after both sucking in a few deep ones for a minute or two) Swan Ath hit the scoreboard first. And managed to get the lead, then Wanneroo hit straight back as the crowd was now in full voice. Swan Ath hit back though but with 4 minutes left Wanneroo hit the lead once more. Wanneroo had a chance to ice the game, but missed the kick, as Swan Ath went straight up the other end and kicked a point. Wanneroo kicked the ball 65m straight down the middle only for Swan Ath to send it back in as Wanneroo led by 3 points.
Wanneroo then kicked it straight down the middle again. This time the ball landed near the middle and Wanneroo managed to clear the ball to inside its 50. Swan Ath marked it...played on, only for the player to be run down. Wanneroo managed to ice the game, and register a huge win for the club.

In a tough season both on and off field it was definitely a well deserved win for all members, as they won a tight one by 3 points.

It definitely takes the pressure off them relegation wise, but a win next week is needed to seal the deal.
