MrM awoke Saturday and saw some sun shining with the promise it was too be a good day. On the way to the game MrM was quite buoyant, it was raining, but not enough to deter the masses and MrM was off to Saturday football, so you know it was going to be a good day especially with a good colts game in store.
Wanneroo colts started the game well and we're definitely out to prove that they deserved a double chance come finals time. They played 3 quarters of very good football. In the last quarter they didn't play too good of a quarter, but they had done all the work early on, so it need not matter as Wanneroo colts ran out winners by a few goals.
It was time for the Reserves game, but perhaps starting the game 5 minutes early cost Wanneroo as Whitford got off to a good start kicking 6 goals to 1 in the first quarter. Wanneroo definitely played better in quarters 2,3 and 4 but the damage was all but done in the first quarter. Whitford won the game by a few goals
It was time for the league game and boy was MrM excited because he knew Wanneroo were up and about. Wanneroo got off to a great start despite kicking into the wind and were leading at quarter time of the contest. In the second quarter it was much tighter and the rains started coming in. Wanneroo kicked a goal after the siren to put themselves in front at half time and that's when things got interesting.
Probably due to the fact he hadn't had a touch up until this time number #39 from Whitford thought he'd take matters into his own hands and started a mini fracas. Nothing much in it, although MrM would note that if you're a man in your 30's might be time to ditch the bleached blonde tips look in the hair.
Both teams were fired up heading into the change rooms at half time, but none more than a Whitford crowd member who got stuck into the hard working Wanneroo President who was Runner for Reserves and League game.
A nice little war of words erupted as the Whitford crowd member questioned whether Wanneroo's President had the physique or conditioning to be runner. This was as the runner was escorting the umpires off...by himself, without the Whitford runner... $50 fine thanks WAAFL, invoice Whitford now, they have heaps of $.
MrM fired up for "The Pres" in the only way he knew how, scoffing down his hot chips quickly and muttering under his breath something about the guy being a flog. If you're going to sledge a gent, pick your targets...not the guy I'd be getting into a war of words with, but I'll give "The Pres" the Round 1 victory here (that's right folks...we had more than one Round of this, but we will get back to it).
As the heavens opened up during and after halftime the ground became heavier, muddier and the football being played stepped up a notch in physicality levels. Whitford managed to steady themselves kicking with the wind, but Wanneroo were putting up a great fight. As we neared 3 quarter time the rain was getting heavier and heavier but with Wanneroo kicking with the breeze in the last I was excited by the prospect of Wanneroo coming home strong.
The day got darker, so the lights were turned on, watching "The Pres" run to turn them ensured it was Round 2 of the earlier battle.
The jiggly sledge was again produced by Whitford faithful, MrM laughed as all "The Pres" could muster was the one fingered salute back to the crowd. (Round 2 was awarded to Whitford). Wanneroo kicked the first goal of the last to put them ahead by 3 points as the Wanneroo faithful and MrM were getting louder. (I'm definitely not saying the Wanneroo crowd were without fault, but MrM thinks the Whitford crowd was a little embarrassing with some comments).
After Wanneroo hit the lead, it was quickly diminished as Whitford kicked 3 quick goals to put them ahead by 2 goals but still with half the quarter to play. Wanneroo just couldn't get it moving forward as Whitford kicked another goal to put themselves in an unassailable position. It was a hard fought game and no doubt a few sore bodies resulted in the end of it. Whitford managed to win by a few goals.
After the game it was time for Round 3. As the umpires were escorted off the ground both by teams runners this time (maybe Whitford couldn't afford to fork out more $ who knows). Despite winning the contest the Whitford crowd obviously had never heard the term be gracious in win or defeat. As they once again got stuck into "The Pres" physical stature, whilst it's probably water off a ducks back to the man, MrM enjoyed some retorts he heard fired back at the Whitford, as the Wanneroo faithful fully agreed.
It must have been nice for Whitford to sit in a grandstand and have clubrooms that aren't 250 metres from the playing surface. If you're not willing to do the running or water yourself (even if it wasn't awful conditions, still hard to find volunteers) don't judge. Either way though, it was nice to hear some playful crowd banter, but MrM will award Round 3 to Wanneroo.
MrM should also note that the umpires in Colts and League games were very good, easily best all season.
