MrM had an interesting Saturday and that's because the lovely Angela Tsun told MrM the previous evening that he would need to assemble two of every animal as we were facing Biblical like storms. It rained on Saturday for a grand total of about 15 minutes, not only was the rain weaker than Lindsay Thomas going up in a marking contest, but MrM wasted his whole Saturday morning collecting two of every animal.
MrM didn't see much of the colts game, but Kingsway won, good on them, must have a good colts system reaching the colts final 3 in about the last 4-5 years from my understanding. It might have been C Grade where they won 2 flags, but that good setup and structure is paying dividends in B Grade too. I still think Wembley and Collegians are the best Colts sides.
The Reserves was a good contest. Swan Ath though were too good though. The big Croat from Swan Ath was best on ground for me. The big Yuke could do no wrong, apart from some wayward kicking, he was the game winner. Swan Ath will need to work hard to get past Whitford, but I think they could do it.
MrM would like to take this opportunity to thank all the hard working volunteers at the canteen and bar during game day at not only Wanneroo, but at all grounds. MrM may whinge and cry about no hot chips, but everyone does the best they can. So from the bottom of MrM's heart, I salute you.
Just after MrM finished sitting down after indulging himself in some of the canteens finest products the first quarter had started and it's fair to say the closest margin of the day was 11 seconds into the first quarter as the scores were level at this stage. 12 seconds into the first quarter Hamersley had kicked themselves a goal. MrM should have studied the tea leaves because that set the tone for the rest of the day, but the pure naivety from MrM thought this was just an aberration and Wanneroo would be back. Even when Hamerlsey piled on the next 6 goals of the quarter before Wanneroo kicked one, MrM was still ever the optimist hoping that Wanneroo could get back into the game. After a few choice words by the coach and some in the crowd suggesting they turn to MrM for a lift, they boys were pumped for the second quarter.
Wanneroo managed a mini fight back in the second quarter, when I say mini it was as brief as the rain that was forecast. They kicked 3 goals, which usually translates to a good quarter, except they allowed Hamersley to kick 5 goals themselves which effectively shut Wanneroo out of the contest. But nevertheless MrM was still confident that surely even though Hamersley had looked too quick and too good all day, that after half time Wanneroo would have taken some of Michael Jordan's secret stuff (Space Jam reference) and come out and dominate to record a comeback for the ages.
Sadly they didn't find any of Michael's secret stuff and they were quite up too it in the second half either, although the they did manage to somewhat stem the flow of Hamersley run and dominance through the midfield in the third quarter. As I've said before, MrM, perhaps defiantly, still thought "gee, Wanneroo will fight back in the last quarter here" and I'll really give it to the Hamersley faithful whom seemed to multiply by the minute as they got louder every time Hamersley, did well or Wanneroo caused a turnover (which was often).
The faith MrM had in Wanneroo's fightback was short lived. The game was effectively over at quarter time, but MrM never stopped believing but Hamersley were more prepared to put in the effort required to win the contest. I said it would be won or lost in the midfield...well it was won well and truly by Hamerlsey. As they were rampant on there way to a 8 goal win. A good game, some enjoyable banter between crowd and players. Nothing sinister, just good ole fashioned fun.
Do I think they can defeat Wembley next weekend? Possibly not. But they are in with a chance and that's what counts, never count out anybody in a two horse race.
All in all a relatively good season for Wanneroo, winning 12 games is still a pretty good effort to me. I was here every week, win or lose. Unlike some people who came to whinge some weeks then would disappear for a few.
While we are here, any tips for tonight's WAAFL Medal Night? I'm going to go with the Big Shuff from Scarborough. Or Joyce from Hamersley, but really I'd have no idea.
Somebody from Wembley or Scarborough would be safe bet. MrM may be getting an award, no idea what, but I was told to be there...either that or those in the know at the WAAFL know people want to greet the great man. So come along and say g'day.
