Well Hamersley had a surprise loss and Stirling kept their chance of avoiding relegation alive with a nice win over Maddington. Other than that things went pretty much as expected. You'd have to think that the Top 5 is set and ready to go.
The Colts again put up a great performance but fell short of registering another win. With a minimal bench and then suffering s few injuries it was going to be tough to stay in the game, but they worked hard for the whole game and it shows that hard work will pay off. Ultimately though they didn't get the 4 points and that's what footy is about. I'm sure they will rectify that soon enough though.
The Reserves well the less said about them the better they were completely outclassed and looked a shadow of the side that defeated Hamersley a week earlier. Only kicking one goal for the game is never going to win a game of football. They will need to finish the season off strong and show they are a lot better then what they have shown.
As the sun was going down and the temperature was getting colder we were set for the highly anticipated League match. Wanneroo got the early jump on Swan Ath and were dominating the play from the early outset and kicked 4 goals inside the first 10 minutes of the match, Swan Ath to their credit fought back and kicked a few goals just before quarter time. It was an even second quarter as both sides had opportunities and were moving the ball quite well. Swan Ath took their chances though as they reduced Wanneroo's lead at half time to only a few points.
It got much colder at half time but the contest was just warming up.
Swan Ath controlled the third quarter and as the conditions got a bit dewy, they still had the big forwards who were clunking everything that came near them. We finished the third quarter and it was Swan Ath who opened up a few goal lead and it was going to be tough for Wanneroo to bounce back.
Wanneroo failed to make an early inroads into the Swan Ath lead in the early stages of the last quarter. It was a tough contested match for most of the game as Number 1 from Swan Ath was given a yellow card, for reasons unknown, I suspect due to his poor behaviour and given how he carried on when he was sent off, I suggest it was past his bed as the toys were well and truly thrown out of the pram.
Wanneroo managed to sneak a few goals though and were down by one goal with 5 minutes left. They drew level with 2 minutes to go as the Wanneroo crowd was in full voice cheering the home side on. It was tough to get a clean possession after the ball went back to the middle but Wanneroo managed to grab a mark and have a set shot from the 50. The ball just fell short and Wanneroo was unable to rush a behind. A few tense moments from either side as the clock wound down and the game finished a draw.
A great match and I'm sure these two sides will come up against each other again later down the track. Another special mention to Swan Ath who hung around and conducted their league awards at the club. Always good to mix with the opposition and have a chat, as we are all here for the same reason, having fun and enjoying footy with mates.
