Well the only real surprises were Collegians getting the win over Hamersley Carine and Stirling getting close to Wembley.
The Wanneroo Colts got the day off with a spirited performance against a bigger and stronger Whitford outfit. It was the second game in a row where they have put up a great effort only to fall short. Another win is near and if they can continue to improve they will trouble a few more sides along the way. Whitford won by two points.
The Reserves improved on last weeks performance but again it wasn't enough to get over the line as they faded in the last quarter. Finals may be out of the question for Wanneroo but much like the colts they can make an impact as the season goes on and win a few more games along the way. Wanneroo lost by under 3 goals.
It was time for the big League game with plenty on the line for both sides. Wanneroo got the early jump and if it wasn't for some errant kicking the margin at quarter time could have been larger than the 3 goals it was, with majority of the play in the Wanneroo forward line. Wanneroo again controlled the play in the second quarter and by the main break at half time they had extended that lead to 5 goals.
There was plenty of niggle in the game right from the outset, I cannot recall what quarter a player from Whitford was given the yellow card and a 15 minute cooling off period. But otherwise it was a clean game, but MrM thought in the second half things could get interesting.
Wanneroo again had most of the play in their forward as they continued to control the play. As we neared the third quarter siren Wanneroo had pushed the lead out to 8 goals as they set about looking to put the foot down in the last quarter and come away with a big win. However Whitford had different plans as Wanneroo dropped off their intensity. They allowed Whitford back into the game as a few in the Wanneroo crowd were feeling nervous, but Wanneroo managed to settle and walk away with a 4 goal victory. With a tough month ahead a good win was needed.
The banter between the two crowds was quite enjoyable and it even got MrM laughing which made for a good afternoon. The reunion of the 1995 Premiership side was also a great occasion and to see a few old faces down at the club and stay around for awards was brilliant.
