Well what a mixed bag of results. Wembley had a massive win over Round 1 winners Stirling. Hamersley Carine and Swan Athletic continued on their winning ways and Scarborough got their season underway. As for Wanneroo v Whitford let me go into further detail here...
Well what a beautiful day it was on Saturday. The sun was shining and MrM could feel it in the air that it could be a good day for Wanneroo. I arrived on Saturday midway through the second quarter of the colts. Only to have no idea of who was winning because as far as MrM could see, Whitford didn't have a scoreboard. It was lucky for MrM that I had some help and it was my fellow clubman whom pointed out it was on the balcony, some 58 metres (MrM paced this out) from the boundary line.
The colts had only kicked 1 goal up until MrM arrived but things got interesting after I turned up. Just before the half time a Whitfords player gave away a 100 metre penalty. Resulting in a Roos goal. And then to cap it off he was given a yellow card for abuse and Wanneroo got another goal to hit the lead at the half time siren sounded.
A close second half saw the lead change a few times Wanneroo had the lead with a few minutes left, but Whitford got the lead back and carried it until the final siren as they ran out winners by 10 points.
It was after the Colts game that MrM heard a vicious rumour that Whitfords didn't have a canteen. So being a curious man I thought I'd venture up the hill as it was to see for myself. Well to my horror, MrM's inside man was half correct. No canteen. MrM had to go to the Bar and all they had on offer was pies, sausage rolls. not hot chips... I REPEAT NO HOT CHIPS. Overall a disappointing dismal attempt at a canteen. I was relieved later on to find out they were making hot roast beef n gravy rolls. But as far as MrM was concerned the damage was done. Not a great start to MrM's away adventures this season. 2/10
The Reserves was another close contest. Wanneroo played good football, but ran out of legs and were overrun by Whitford late in the game. Still many young players with 8 reserves players under 21 getting good experience. Whitford now had won 2/2 and I was hoping it wasn't going to be a preview of the League game.
MrM caught a glimpse of the lovely ladies day that had been organised well away from the crowd and quite a distance away from MrM (very clever on who ever organised that, one look at MrM and you would have seen 40 new Wanneroo supporters) seemed like most of the girls had a good time. As for the talent...well MrM will give it a pass mark. 5/10
Time for the League game now. Judging by the crowd that had built at various places around the ground, it was a much anticipated clash between two foes, who were meeting for the first time in League football in nearly 10 years. A difficult breeze plagued most players all day and made converting chances from the clubrooms side tough. Wanneroo got off to a good start kicking the first goal and it was a tough contested game right from the start. It went goal for goal in the first quarter. A little fracas broke out at the end of the first quarter. With handbag throws and verbal barrages being exchanged from all involved. It made for a little extra spice heading into the next three quarters, MrM doesn't care much for poor sledging.
It was much of the same in the second quarter, tough football with one Whitfords player coming off after an accidental knock to the head, bleeding from the back of the skull. I can't remember the exact score at quarter time however, let's say it was a draw
Whitford hit the front in the third quarter and opened the lead out to few goals. Number 18 from Whitfords threw a little sucker punch then quickly ran from the ground as if he was scared of what was to come. (Probably was always going to the bench, but I overdramatise). He wasn't welcomed by the Wanneroo faithful when he returned to the ground. Whitfords threatend to to break the game open but Wanneroo hit back as they reduced the margin heading into the final break.
Wanneroo then opened up the same few goal lead early in the last quarter. Towards of the game a few sore and tired bodies were barely moving. As Wanneroo managed to hold on to win in the end and grab their second "Simon" for the season.
MrM overheard a few men complaining about the umpiring, no surprise they were from the losing side. I thought the game was officiated quite well and the umpire was hot on the whistle all day, ensuring that things didn't get out of hand. You could argue he could have let the game flow more, but I have no issue.
Overall quite a good day, if you don't include the canteen or the fact after speaking to the manager, that Whitford didn't supply any shelter for the away team other than a green bunker well away from the boundary. While Whitford had massive shelters set up for their team and ladies at ladies day.
MrMs game day experience 5/10.

Looking forward to hearing some clubs reviews.
