Well here we are after Round 1. A few teams would be disappointed after not getting off to a great start but still 17 rounds to go. MrM doesn't like to glorify individual efforts, so I have removed the goal kickers. People are more then welcome to post that though.
As usual MrM started off his day with a lovely breakfast and I was looking forward to heading to the Showgrounds to watch "The Battle of the White V" between Wanneroo and Wembley.
After arriving just after the colts started I was buoyant on the fact they seemed to have all the play, but couldn't quite hit the scoreboard. Unfortunately every time Wembley went forward they scored with ease. A few injuries coming out of the game and never good to see a player possibly miss the rest of the season but hey, that's football. A young Wanneroo side with only a handful of players over the age of 18, can only improve. Wembley ran out winners by about 10 goals.
So the time was here, to see if the Wanneroo canteen were still producing some of the greatest hot chips around. After eating a few MrM can safely say, if you attend a game at The Wanneroo Showgrounds, have yourself a large hot chips with gravy. Or even without the gravy, because I had both and loved it. Also grab yourself a Roo Burger, my second favourite burger behind the one I had at Manning one day!
After scoffing down lunch at the end of the colts game, I still had a few minutes to wait before the reserves game got started. No it wasn't a long break, MrM just has a large appetite, that needed to be filled, quickly.
I was looking forward to the Reserves game because both teams were looking ready for some Football, when MrM was on the football field you could see the fear in his opponents eyes as I strolled up to the , but now he just sees sheer delight in players eyes as they know they need not contain MrM.
The Reserves was a good tight battle all game. The heavens opened up midway through the game, which made for some greasy conditions for a while and with the Wanneroo track being considered a "heavy 10" it produced a few sore bodies at the end of the game. After being a tight contest throughout Wanneroo managed to hit the lead with just under 10 minutes to play but couldn't hold it as they started fumbling the football, Wembley drew the scores level and kicked the winning goal with 2 minutes left to play. A well deserved win to Wembley and I'm sure both teams, will improve as the season goes on. Wembley won by a goal.
Well everybody knows it's the League game the crowd has come to see, so it was no surprise to see the numbers swell for the league game at Wanneroo. The crowd was building and anticipation rising for the first bounce of the football.
Wanneroo got off to a good start through the first quarter and were gifted a goals thanks to some 50 metre penalties. Wembley did manage to kick a few goals into a tricky breeze that picked up towards later in the day. So nobody was too sure how strong off effective the breeze was until both sides had used. Wanneroo managed to repel the attacks into the Wembley forward line and the Roos had a few goals advantage heading into the main break. It was an even contest throughout the first half, little bit of rain made the ball a bit slippery but it didn't affect the first half too much.
It was much of the same in the second half. Wanneroo got the ball into the forward line thanks to some good movement of the football. Wanneroo opened up a 5 goal advantage as they made full use of the breeze and and sloppy Wembley play. Given how Wanneroo gave up a few leads like this last season it was expected to be a good last quarter. However it was wasn't to be, it was just mostly goal for goal as Wanneroo finished winners by the same margin as at 3 quarter time.
Wembley were off their game just and that's all Wanneroo needed and took advantage, but don't count out Wembley, as they did also loose their first game last season to Wanneroo.
Looking at the results, it's very clear to see its going to be a tough B Grade. Interested to hear how some other games went, other than the one where people were bagging out a club volunteer. I'm very much looking forward to the remaining 17 rounds this season.
