Well what a good week in football. The race for 4th and 5th spot on the ladder is wide open, and the relegation battle heats up. Wembley disposed of Willetton, Bullcreek (as MrM predicted) got over Scarborough, Maddo surprised North Freo, Hamersley got the job done against Kelmscott away from home and Wanneroo...well I'll tell you in a moment.
First of all I'd like to take a moment and give a mention and thank all those who commented on this weeks preview...that's right it was zero. You know it must have been a slow week on OzFooty when MrM got more hits on Tinder.
MrM again had an early start on Saturday attending the local markets to get some fresh produce. If you've never experienced the pleasure of attending your local markets I suggest going down and having a look.
I arrived just in time to watch some colts action. With Claremont having a bye it meant the young colts players were up against some bigger gents in the Collegians lineup. Well they were up against it from the start and they ended up losing by 90 points. Two positive notes for Wanneroo, nearly all the side can play again next season and they were accurate when kicking on goal kicking 6 straight.
The reserves were quite depleted thanks to the league side also being depleted. Yet they managed to find 22 guys ( thanks to thirds and fourths having a bye) to play the game. They managed to string together a four quarter effort and get the win. Sadly despite some optimism amongst the group finals appear to be out of the question. They can however finish the season off strong and please the ever supportive MrM.
It was time for the league game with some youngsters getting a run due to several injuries to regular league players, ranging from appendix's being removed to merely a bruised hip.
It was quite close throughout the first quarter with both sides kicking 3 goals each. Big James Clement proved to be a more than useful target for Collegians when they were going forward and he managed to snare a few goals. Wanneroo dropped off in the early part of the second quarter. However they managed to get a few goals before half time and had hit the lead by the main break.
Wanneroo did come out after half time and kick the first 3 goals to open up a buffer between them and Collegians. Both sides tackling and pressure around the ground was quite rough and tough and with the ground conditions being particularly tough (given that Wanneroo Showgrounds resembles a mud pit) it resulted in a few injuries to both sides and a few ill disciplined acts costs teams.
Wanneroo led by a few goals as we started the last quarter and were going along nicely till 10 minutes to go as Wanneroo were up by 16 points, that quickly became 4 points and the game was on. Collegians hit the post a few times and were quite wasteful going forward. (Both sides were actually) however Wanneroo managed to hold on and win by 1 goal which keeps there hopes of playing finals alive.
Collegians have a very important game up against Bullcreek next weekend which will determine relegation.
